oral device?

Post by dolson » Fri May 11, 2012 8:57 am

on the apnea scale I scored a 50.4. I had surgery about 8-10 years ago, but the condition returned in about 3 years. I am CPAP intolerant and would like to try a jaw advancement device. The problem is that there are so many out there, and at prices from 20.00 to 500.00. I have used a couple of devices in the past. Most don't stay in my mouth and good one can no longer be shipped to the US from cananda. Any suggestions re: a good product that will help. Need to do something.

Please do not buy an over the counter device, but be fitted by a dentist. You may need adjustments along the line. The OTC devices are usually not helpful.

I was considering the same thing with the oral devices as I have good dental insurance, but now I have fallen in love after 2 nights on CPAP. Why are you CPAP intollerant?

I can not keep a cpap on. It's like someone is smothering me. I have tried one at home for 2 or 3 weeks without success. I also have tried different types of masks in a number of sleep studies. There just don't seem to be many options within financial reach.

Some people have trouble tolerating CPAP when the pressure is either too high or too low for initial adjustment.

You are correct, there are about 20 different oral appliances on the market with varying degrees of efficacy. Most densists will sell one particular product. However, there are some dentists that specialize in apnea and tmj issues that are familiar with many of the mouth pieces. They can help you select an appliance that would work best for you. Take a look at the TAP-3 device. Many dentists feel that this is the most effective oral appliance. Cost can range anywhere from $800-$2000 depending on how much the particlar dentist (it costs the dentist around $400 to have the device made).
