Which Med. causes the most RLS?

Post by wildman 2 » Mon Apr 23, 2012 7:20 am

Friends,
I have an appt. with my doctor next week. I want to get off of one of my two meds. I take 450mg. of Wellbutrin, and 60mg. of Cymbalta. Which one in your opinion causes more RLS? It will be my choice on which one I want to come off of. Thanks for your input!

Hi Wildman 2

This may not be answering your question exactly, but my husband too has RLS. He would have it every night for hours if it weren't for mirapex. He still gets it about 25% of the time even with mirapex. He is also on effexor an anti-depressant that doesn't seem to effect his RLS as far as I know. I know that Klonipin (anti anxiety med) can help a little with RLS, but he doesn't take that on a regular basis. Hope this info helps a little.

It's great that you feel you can start weening yourself off these types of meds. Can you pls let us know what your doc says? I'm on wellbutrin and cilexa and would love to (someday) be done with whatever med is giving me the RLS (mild but very annoying).

Jszucs,
Thanks for the info. You might want to do a "search" for side effects for Effexor. I was on it for about 3months, and my RLS increased dramatically! Once I quit the Effexor my RLS went back to where it was originally.

A doc has prescribed 55mg Iron per day for me for a six month trial to see if that reduces RLS. Anybody here have any luck with Iron?

I take Iron for other reasons, but for RLS I take a MAGNESIUM & ZINC tab, my RLS is not often but the tab knocks it out in 15 minutes. Jim

I'd advise Wildman2, to use his med's as the doctor states, and when comming off them wean them down correctly.

I am not qualified to advise you on this, but I was on Cymbalta for a couple of years after trying most all the anti-depressants out there at one time or another. Cymbalta is a very difficult medication for most people to wean off of under the advice of a doctor. The first time I tried getting off it the side effects were awful and I could not do it. This past summer I was successful at getting off of it, by using a low dose of prozac during the weaning stage, still it was not a piece of cake. I have weaned off of wellbutrin (years ago) easily, as well as prozac, paxil, and effexor, Cymbalta was a horse of another color. That doesn't mean you will have a rough time of it, but that is one medication I would not recommend to someone looking for a temporary condition. IMHO

Very important question: What is your serum ferritin level?

I am following the RLS Foundation guidelines to treat subclinally low serum ferritin. Briefly, if you have RLS and your serum ferritin level is below 50 you treat to bring it up to 50. Please see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=75877&p=693971#p693971 and open up the links to the RLS Foundation and read their paper.

Please read the thread and if you post questions there I will be happy to answer them.

My serum ferritin level was 22 and I am experiencing excellent improvement from RLS since starting iron supplementation. I need to get another blood test because iron supplementation will be dangerous if overdone.

What is your serum ferritin level? If you want to continue this discussion please use the other thread in order to avoid Wellbutrin/Cymbalta discussion.
