First Night!

Post by Suzjohnson » Sat Apr 21, 2012 9:48 am

Visited with the sleep doc yesterday for going over the results of the tritation study. He said I responded very well to CPAP therapy. My overall AHI went from 22.3 events an hour in the original study down to 1.9. Hooray!! I asked to be able to shop around for my equipment so he gave me the prescription and I danced all the way to my car. On the drive home I spontaneously stopped at a local DME to see what they had and get a feel for their attitude. My gosh, they were just super! Continued my ride home an hour and a half later with the back seat full of stuff. Cool, way cool!! So, my first night wasn't all that bad. Minimum pressure set at 6, maximum at 10, humidity at 3. Took a little longer than usual for my eyes to slam shut and was aware of waking up a few times with discomfort in my neck and back which is typical when I don't turn over a lot. Leaks were almost non-existent. Stats this morning said my AHI was 1.13 and slept for almost 8 hrs. I'm certain this one, fine night won't be typical once I start moving around more but it is very encouraging to see how well the therapy can work.
I am so grateful to have this opportunity to improve my health and get my life back.

Suzanne

Thanks Max!! Yeah, I'm a data fiend myself. Downloaded Sleepyhead last night and will sit down with it this afternoon and get acquainted. I'm certain to have a bunch of questions so hope the forum won't block me due to my dunderheadedness!

I'm jumpin' up and down for you!! Keep up the good work. You are more fortunate than most folks are. Count your blessings! If you have issues work thru each of them and seek advise at this forum. Shop for masks if the one you have is not comfortable or leaks too much. Your enthusiasm makes my day!!

Suzanne,

Hmmm...it took me about 8 months to get to the point where I could sleep through the night, keep leaks under control, and get a good AHI all in the same night. Congrats on having a superb night right off the bat, and also for being pro-active about getting your machine and getting started.

BTW, I also woke up sore the first few weeks. I was used to getting up every 60 to 90 minutes all night long, so I never stayed in one position very long. Suddenly with CPAP, I was sleeping in the same position for 4 to 6 hours at a time, and I'd wake up stiff. For a while, I would take an Advil before bedtime, but I eventually got used to it. Exercise also helped.

Hi John!
Last night my "before I go to sleep thought" was to disregard everything and just sleep. Must have worked because the 6 hrs. I got were so restorative. The leak rate was off the chart a few times but only briefly and the AHI went from Friday's 1.13 to 1.16. I expect to have some discomfort in my neck and lower back due to issues of long standing and happy to note that this morning it was what I now consider normal. You are right, exercise helps so much. I love that commercial that says "A body in motion tends to stay in motion." No clue what the product is that's being advertised but every time I hear that line it reminds me of the importance of physical and mental activity. As my physical abilities desert me I put more emphasis on mental agility and I believe the hardest part of untreated SA is the loss of cognitive abilities. What a relief to think I may get some of that back!

Hope you had a good night!

Suzanne

OutSTANDing!!!!!!!!! : ) Don't be surprised if you are able to retain that beautiful low AHI, and even better it from time to time. Love it!

Way to GO !!!!!!!!!!! : ) I had Bruised Nose Syndrome, Mummy Posture Syndrome, Chronic Centrals Syndrome, Muliple Mask Syndrome, Drop Dead Oximetry Syndrome, Hose Managementisis and more. You may get a few of them along the way, but they're all kinda cool and we do get over them. Hope your ride continues being nice, but if there's a bump here and there, that's par for the course too. Welcome and All the best to you!

Congrats to you too Jen!! I hope those good night continue for both of us. I woke up with a bruise on my nose this morning. What a surprise because I was totally comfortable while I was awake. Go figure....

Oh, that sounds fun! My favorite visualizations when I'm trying to go to sleep is to either walk through a garden or lay on my stomach on a wooden platform high in a tree, feel the sun on my back and watch for birds to fly by. Both are so peaceful but I may try Mars with you tonight, if you don't mind the company.

This made me laugh out loud! They probably weren't so comical at the time you were going through them but bless you for sharing and poking some fun at yourself. It's reassuring to know that as the problems come, so shall they go.

Thanks for writing, all of you. The sense of community here gives me warm fuzzies!
