Weight loss advice!?! - join in the fun
Every Dr. tells me to lose weight! ask them how.... use more calories than you intake..... Thanks Doc (you don't say )
Little bit about me. 30, 6'5", 260 lb. been on CPAP for 2 months, VPAP adapt for 1 week.
I run 1.5 -3 miles a day, I used to work out with lifting also but the doctors have told me muscle weight is as bad or worse for apnea then being plesently plump. So now I just run but tire easily because ...well , because I'm tired. I do feel the VPAP working and I do feel running helping. but the more awake I am and the more I run, the more old feet injuries from stupid things I did in my teens start to kick in. I have a truly awsome pair of footwear that I recomend with all my heart although they are ugly it's like running on a cloud; "Brooks Ghost 4"
My problem is this. I don't want to rely soley on running or biking, because if I for whatever reason can't exercise (possible minor minor back surgery in the future, but long skin heal time) I want to setup a diet for myself. Nutrisystem is as gross as eating sand, lean cusine is basically pouring salt on a cup of pasta everyday. Slim fast is basically starvation with the aid of melted chocolate bars; although temporarily very well working except for the lactose .
What works people of CPAP land! For the most part every PAP user I have met could stand to lose a few in poundage/(kilogramage ) lets do this thing together! if there is already a topic for this sort of thing point me there or start anew with me!
Particular diet that works? excersise routine that works? whats the best meal to to focus on lunch (worldly view) or dinner( USA)
Concerns/ Successes?

There are threads on here about Low Carb, High Fat diets that work for many.
Eat all the steak and butter you want....forget about the potatoes, wheat, rice and sugar.
I have just started this WOE (Way of eating) this week. Check it out.

Low Carb High Fat. It is absolutely the way to do it. Clearly moving more, eating less does not work, or we'd all be thin and happy.
Eat real food, avoid grains, starchy vegetables, most fruits (berries are OK in moderation) and all forms of sugar. Eat plenty of mono and saturated (yes, you read that right) fat. Avoid omega 6 fats (nut and seed oils) and never eat transfats (margarine, shortening, etc). CCut out grains (sorry, Pumpernickel!). Eat plenty of fish, fowl, and meat with its natural fat. Eat whole eggs, plenty of non-starchy vegetables. This could not be simpler and it works. http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
42 pounds down and counting. I feel fantastic, I eat well. No starving. Blood lipids are perfect, blood sugar is under control, blood pressure down, no pain, I'm able to be active, and my tendency to be depressed is GONE!
Take a look at Paleo and Primal sites too, they might really work for you. My favorite resource is http://www.marksdailyapple.com.

At 6'5", 260lb is not that bad if you have a good muscle structure. I know several guys in their 40s who are 6'5'-6'6" who weigh 265 and better who do not look fat at all.
Good luck on your program.

Re: Weight loss advice!?! - join in the fun
I have another way of doing it.
Eat more protein than carbs and more carbs than fat. Do not cut out on either one of the three. Of course total calorie intake must be reasonnable (it is possible to count your daily base calorie metabolism based on age, sex, size, etc..., substract up to 1000 cals per day to get the daily recommended calorie intake for weight loss.).
The most important meal of the day is breakfast. Lighter meal in the evening, with as less carbs as possible (especially starchy foods).
This is the way that is most "normal" for the human body. Other diets will maybe lead to a faster weight loss but as soon as they are stopped, the weight gain will come back with a vengeance (the body does not like unbalanced diets and as soon as it can get it's "hands" on the elements it is missing it will stock them as fast as possible).
Do not consider any food banned, otherwise you will at one point feel the frustration of not being allowed to eat things others eat and that will lead to reverting to old bad habits. I you want to go out and indulge yourself, no problem, just don't do it everyday I have a party planned on wednesday and I know it will end in a calorie orgy but that doesn't bother me, I'll go back to my normal daily healthy eating habits on Thursday and my weight will be ok.
I have been doing this for 11 months now, and I have lost slightly more than 75 lbs, I do not feel as if I'm on a diet, I am not tired, bloodwork is excellent.
As an afterword, I would add that probably no diet is universal. It will depend on each person, healthwise or tastewise. What works with one person may not work with an other. But what I find most important is to like what you eat because if the way you eat allows you to lose weight, you will probably have to eat that way the rest of your life... (it's kind of the CPAP of food )

Re: Weight loss advice!?! - join in the fun
The only thing that works for me is a high protein diet and extremely low carbs. I pretty much do a modified Atkins. Once I get on a diet I can do really great, it's maintaining that is the problem. I have lost 26 pounds since mid January doing this. I have made a change to what I usually do and that is I'm doing a whey protein powder shake every day. A plain liquid shake would never fill me up, but I have come up with my own version where I make it into a slushy, using about 4 cups of ice and putting everything in the blender, crushing the ice. Besides the protein powder, I put in some sugar free Citracel and also some sugar free flavored jello powder. Blend and crush and I get this nice thick shake that takes a while to eat/drink and gives me what I need taste wise. Sometimes I throw in fresh strawberries or a banana. Of course, I'm also on a med to keep me awake during the day and that also helps me not get hungry. Today I'm cooking up chicken to freeze in single portions. That makes sit easier and I always have something available and no excuse to eat something I'm not supposed to eat. As they say, without a plan you plan to fail. I know I won't lose much more weight unless I get back to walking and hope to do so in the next couple of weeks. Money gets to be the problem as I must join a gym. Walking here with the dogs that run loose - no way. I've already been bitten twice by dogs and am not going for a third time.

I can't see anything wrong with muscles.
Muscles burn calories--even when you're not doing anything.
Carbohydrates are the bad thing--they make you crave more carbs.
Ever notice how many carbs are in the processed 'diet' foods?
This is not because they work--it is because they DON'T.
How would Atkins, Weight Watchers, and Nutrisystem make any money if they didn't have REPEAT BUSINESS!

Ditto to Chunkyfrogs pos!, I should own WW by now! I've been on LCHF for almost 2 weeks and have never felt better. I've made a few unconscious and conscious boo boos, diet soda, sunflower seeds and a bit of ice cream, but I've lost some weight which is the bonus, but I feel better already than all the times I lost a lot of weight on the diets mentioned above!

Do you think that once you start feeling better (because of CPAP) that you move more and tend to choose the right foods? When I'm tired I always want junk. I hope when I feel better (haven't started treatment yet) that I will make better decisions - even if I'm not following a specific food plan.

When I began to feel better, I gained weight. I felt like cooking, but any amount of excercise left me snoozing all afternoon. I am trying the low carb way of eating so I will, hopefully, feel like moving soon.

Nope, cpap or no cpap I was a sugar, carb addict, no food, just sugar and junk! Now that I'm older and facing other health issues it was time to make a change, and it was a post on the forum by janknitz that caught my eye, all about FEELING better.

Being diabetic, the mere presence of chocolate in the house creates an irresistible sucking action.
It pulls on me with a force so great. . .
Who knew there would be DARK chocolate eggs on clearance!

Re: Weight loss advice!?! - join in the fun
first few days of the new way of life and I'm feeling a little lighter, at least in spirit.
Stopped munching after 8
loading up on fiber
forcing myself to go running outside 2 miles
concentrating on getting a solid 8 hr sleep, still hanging on the 7 hour scheduale because of my wife but she's starting to give in, and she is now running with me

I've lost 20 lbs so far this way which is the same way I lost 50 lbs 6 years ago. I eat five balanced meals every day; one every three hours starting at 6am. No snacking in between or after the last meal AT ALL!! Cheat day is all day Saturday . Low carbs and low fat. Lots of green veggies and egg white omlets with tomato in the morning. Cut out all the carbonated beverages, caffein (even de-caf) and stop all alcohol use except for a glass of wine I have on Friday. It's sucks at first to eat this way but you get used to it and I rather enjoy coming up with low fat/carb dishes.
I also walk briskly 3 or 4 miles every day. I work in an office close to our warehouse so I get out there twice a day. there's also a gym on-site that I use twice a week.
I'm also 54 years old so I learned the hard way that the only way to accomplish my weight loss goals is to have a plan and stick with it. Tough for me because I LOVE to eat and sample beer and wines. I still cheat every now and hen to keep my soul in tact...

Re: Weight loss advice!?! - join in the fun
Dieting for me is always so hard. I have a unique immunity to the taste of fruits on vegetables. That is, the only fruits and vegetables that I can stand are green beans, peas, and bananas. That is it. Period.
And I am not talking just a mild dislike - I gag and throw up on pretty much anything else. Every diet tells me that I can eat all the fruits and vegetables I want, and I LOVE green beans, but after awhile, it just gets old stuffing my face with green beans and not being able to eat nearly anything else. I can eat vegetables ground up or stewed in say a soup or something, ala carrots in chicken noodle soup - or tomatoes in ketchup - but most people are quick to say that "They don't even count!" So what is a guy to do?
None the less I have done many diets to little success. A modified Atkins was probably my most successful in my younger years but a balanced diet and exercise is honestly the best thing IMO. And when I saw balanced I don't mean 3 big meals a day, I mean like 5-6 small meals a day with 3-4 snacks in between them. The key is to keep your metabolism going the entire time. And when it comes to exercise the key is to not fall into a routine. Things constantly need to change or you body will just get used to what you are doing and it won't do a darn thing.
As far as hunger control, which can be an issue for me - I have taken dietary supplements in the past which have worked. Right now I am currently on a thing given to me by a family member called No Surgery Gastric Bypass Powder by Roca Labs. I definitely don't recommend going and spending your paychecks on it cause it costs a fortune, but it does actually work. You just drink a cup of water mixed with the powder in the morning and you have to drink a lot of water throughout the day. Basically the power jellifies and fills your stomach making you fill full. I honestly could go without eating all day with it but I know that wouldn't be safe, so it is best to eat something. Either way, to either their own.
