Problems with EncorePro

Post by Bluecat » Sat Apr 14, 2012 7:34 am

When I try to start EncorePro, it gives me a message that says "could not check the database version". It only gives me one choice: click the "ok" button, and then it closes the window and I'm back to the desktop.
Any ideas?
I haven't changed anything in my setup, no installing/uninstalling etc...

In order to help you better kindly state exactly which version of Encore Pro you are using. There are several ver 2's. Are there 3 decimal places? Each ver behaves differently.

Also need would be which OS, where OS is the Operating System and the Service Pack (SP) level of that OS.

So that is -
Version of EP Pro
OS
SP

Using the "Help" utility to find "My Computer" may help to find some of that info.

THAT, I know part, in a nutshell could be THE problem.

However comma more questions follow.

Did it ever work?

I would think this ver. of EP is written to work with Win7 or higher. Any way to check the software requirements?

Esp. check to see if MS released more new NetFramework updates. I do know they have released many lately.

Any reason you can't use Sleepy Head software?

I have used it since I started CPAP in Feb'11, no problems until today (although I hadn't used it in the past 2 or 3 weeks).
I think I accepted a few updates recently (via windows update), I can't remember if there was any .NET framework update.
I can use Sleepyhead, so getting detailed data isn't really the problem
It's just that I have a professional pilot medical with a waiver for sleep apnea. At each medical, I need to give the summary that can be printed from EncorePro to the medical examiner. Of course I can get that summary from my sleep doctor's secretary, it's just that it was so much easier to print it myself

There is a way to check the "history" of windows updates to see.
Also consider using the Restore option if it is available.

IF you think it was that update make a note of which one. They can cause problems, which is why I tend to wait awhile after they are released. I stopped the auto updates long ago.

You could try repairing this computer or installing EP on another IF you have one.

Isn't it time for a NEW laptop?

In fact the problem is with my desktop computer, true it's now 5,5 years old but I added RAM 1Go to 3.5 Go (maximum that XP can use, in fact there is 4Go installed) and a new video card (1 Go video RAM instead of 256 Mo). All in all, it works quite well!
Automatic updates have been disabled for a while but I must admit I accepted an update without really looking the other day because I was busy working on something else.
My laptop is slightly younger than my desktop computer but is a entry level machine and runs on Vista
BUT... since I rarely use it (it has gotten sooooo slow), it has had no updates for a long time, and EncorePro (that I had installed on it last July) still works!! So I think I will keep updates at a minimum until I find a solution for the desktop computer and do my printouts on the laptop.
I will use Sleepyhead on my desktop computer for regular treatment checking.
Out of curiosity, what's the latest EP version available?
Thanks for your help GumbyCT!

EDIT: loads of updates available for my laptop, including updates to .NET framework and SQL server. Not going to install those!!

I wouldn't Or be selective and just install the critical ones and no .net framework. If you go on the internet with it - it does need to be up-to-date tho.

One fire at a time.

Vista is not that bad but does have it's problems. I called it the beta for 7 but no one got that.

I am happy w/Win7 fwiw. Seems to run as good a XP just get at least 4G of ram.

I don't know the latest EP release but I know there is a new one called EP Basic. Pugsy musta took the day off. I am sure when she does return she will weigh in on this.

I forgot to ask you IF you had any power interruptions on your desk top? IF you did running a check disk may prove helpful. It can be helpful whether you did or not.

Whatever you do - do be forewarned that attempting to remove then re-install EP seems to cause more problems. You may be better off installing a newer or same version right on top of what is there.

In fact, I installed all the security updates but stayed clear of the NET framework and SQL Server updates on the laptop.
There has been no power interruption on my desktop computer (I never leave it on if I am not next to it, so I would know).
Concerning uninstallation of EP, I already did it once, last fall, following three password mistakes , I had to root around in the registry a bit to convince my computer that it was not already installed so that I could install it again without the password blockage
I'm definitely going to think about buying a new desktop computer anyway. I have no use for a laptop as I have the one from work.

Baptism by fire ... lol
Most don't know how to edit the registry and in fact, one can make the pc unusable if done incorrectly.

I like a laptop because it has it's own built-in UPS. And for less than a desktop.

Plus, Usu, you don't want to use a Co. laptop for personal surfing

But hey, that's me.

Came across this today. Thought it might be helpful to others who have a problem with .net framework.

Updated: what to do if other .NET Framework setup troubleshooting steps do not help

Preview...
  • A while back, I posted a set of instructions that can be used to try to resolve .NET Framework installation issues in case other troubleshooting steps listed on my blog, in knowledge base articles or elsewhere do not work. Those steps are out of date now because several new versions of the .NET Framework have been released since then, a new verification tool has been released and there are some other helpful steps that are not listed there. Instead of trying to update those steps in that old post, I decided to write a replacement post that contains the new information.

I have created a .NET Framework troubleshooting guide that contains links to information about various types of .NET Framework installation issues that we've seen over the years. However, the links in that article do not cover all possible errors, and there are likely some scenarios that cannot be resolved by any of the workarounds listed in that article.

The full article is here...
