Is there a way to block posts from certain individuals?

Post by jonnybee » Wed Apr 04, 2012 3:54 pm

My personal preference is to not have the topic list cluttered with OT posts. I realize this has been discussed ad nauseam and am aware that lots of members enjoy participating in OT discussions. I'm not advocating banning OT posts; I just don't want to have to sort through them as I review the list.

Is it possible for me to block posts from those individuals who frequently post OT?

Go to your User Control Panel...One of the tabs is called 'Friends & Foes". You can list anyone as a 'foe' to block their posts. I have several posters on my list...

Yes Lsat, but their conversations still show in your conversations with a note that you have chosen them as foes. Also, you still see their posts in the main index.

Oddly enuff (as of this writing) this is OFF Topic and NOT marked OFF Topic. Do as I say....

Lack of sleep does make people unhappy with the world and the way it was designed.

OT: Re: Is there a way to block posts from certain individu

Post by Slartybartfast » Wed Apr 04, 2012 5:54 pm

Gumby's having too much fun with this.

But seriously, most of us just don't open OT threads when they're marked as such (this one's not) when we're not interested in the topic. There are only 3 OT threads on the topic list out of 53 that are marked OT. Well, make that 4 OT threads, if you include this one. That's only a few percent which is really not too bad for an open, non-moderated forum. At least the OT threads are marked as such (except for this one )

Some titles are so obviously off topic, maybe the "OT" is redundant?
Is it my imagination, or is there a bit of 'chain-yanking' going on?
Come on, guys--get along.

From context, I interpreted Jonnybee's original request to be "is there a way to hide topics from certain individuals." I could be wrong on that of course. It's something I've wondered about too - right now, with just a few OT threads, it's not much of a burden to ignore them, but if it got to be more than a few, it could be a nuisance (especially if it ever got to the point where the OT stuff knocked important On-T threads to the back pages so that newbie questions didn't get seen or answered). That would be something the forum owners would have to wrestle with, if and when it ever came to pass.

Pony up with the cash for Johnny and Caroline and I am sure they would be able to hire someone to let you tailor your experiences.

Just remember when you "foe" someone you also lose any benefit of what they do know.

I haven't noticed many off topic threads until this one.

I don't understand why you couldn't just not read the threads that don't interest you?

Probably it is like not eating the pastries that are in the fridge. They want someone to do the monitoring for them.

I have learned to live with the existence of the OT posts, and sometimes even find them amusing or interesting, although I usually skip them. It was something I had to get adjusted to on cpaptalk, because on other 'net special interest groups I belong to, off-topic posts are not permitted.

But I have noticed that any time that a relative newcomer, like myself, raises a question about how to avoid OT posts, they are treated way too rudely, in my humble opinion. This is uncalled for.

When a newcomer raises a question about policy on the board, or how to use the list most effectively, it's because they want to know the answer. They likely don't know that the question has been asked and answered sometime in the past.

Why mock them?

My apologies to jonnybee.

Nate
