What's Jedimark up to?

Hi,

Just a "ping" letting you all know I'm still alive and haven't given up.

Haven't done much work on SleepyHead at all in the past two months.. Have had to spend a lot of time dealing with real world stuff, leaving not much time, energy or motivation for coding. I'm starting to pick things up again, albeit very slowly. I see a nice big list of bugs waiting for me.. :-/

I survived a year on CPAP.. not a major improvement for me stats or energy wise, but I did finally figure certain fragrances used in hairsprays/deoderants was a major trigger of my daily headaches and fog. Been pretty much free of those type of headaches since the Mrs threw out the offending aerosol sprays. She has unfortunately been the cause of a few other headaches for me, so I'm still not fully functioning yet.

I'm currently having a look into the new PRS1 60 series ("family 4") data format, and also the Probasics ZzzPap machine data. Nothing to report yet.

F&P Icon is working in the source code minus the flow waveform, I think it's also in the last Mac build Jimbo built. I haven't heard many reports on this yet though.

I've made some minor advancements hacking with Respironics M-Series and ResMed S8 smartcard data formats, but no working importer for either yet. I doubt SleepyHead will support the smartcard reading directly, but it will be able to read the images one day. (I need more smartcard images for both of these machine types)

I think the ResMed S9 importer needs a rewrite, there's some crummy issues that need working on. The DST stuff I think is caused by a bug in the Qt libraries date/time stuff. If any fellow nerdy programmer types among you feel up to reviewing the S9 importer in case I missed something obvious, it would be a big help..

I have an S8 vantage at the moment along with software and just to make things interesting I also have the pulse oximeter. I am happy to help supply data in any way possible just let me know what to send.

I am looking at someday getting a new machine and I am excited to see that you are working on both the S9 and the icon. This will make the choice a little more difficult.

Avi...there are many of us that are allergic to certain fragrances, but we don't confine ourselves to the house...we do have to live...yes. So we get a headache or get breathless, we do what we have to do, but believe me we don't hide in the house. Still go to movies, concerts, etc, but if the offending person has dosed themselves with way too much fragrence we just move seats or go elsewhere.

Jed..happy to see you back, soon you will be back to your old self.

I'm still not sure what chemical in particular sets me off. It is only certain chemical/chemicals in aerosol-ized fragrances/perfumes that do it, used in some products I even used to wear when I was younger, which made it rather difficult to convince my wife about how badly they affected me.

I can go out, but when I'm exposed to the wrong stuff the headaches come back pretty much instantly, and it often feels like getting hit in the head with a hammer.. My airways constricts, throat starts to burn, and I can taste something very metallic it in the air.. After exposure a huge fog and tiredness sets in leaving me doughy. Not very fun.

Walking into a pharmacist or "Myers" store main entrance is often impossible.. It's like running the gauntlet.

I found it was very easy to develop an irrational fear of all perfumed products because of it. Took me a while to figure out this chemical wasn't used everywhere, and not all the little old ladies trying to smell pretty with their expensive perfume where out to get me.. Unfortunately, whatever the chemical is, it is still used in quite a lot of products.

The sucky thing is most of the stuff my wife was using regularly was either "low allergenic" or "fragrance free" on the label because she knew fragrances affected me. But they still had whatever damn chemical that affects me.

I'd like to know for sure what it is, I'll have to find some way to convince my doc to organize an allergy test.

I have multiple chemical sensitivity - I used to love the smell of rubbing alcohol - now I can't be around it period or I get sick.

I know what you are describing and some of us have to keep close to home as the real world is way too dangerous a place for us. I live close to the ocean to have "clean air" as almost any airborne pollution makes me sick whether it is from industry, cars. or agriculture including people spraying weeds or exterminating pests. I get sick at the beach when I am around people reeking of perfumes or smoking. I spent 5 days in ICU on O2 after being exposed to "safe" mosquito spray that was sprayed by the city in the alley behind our house in IL in 2000 a year prior to the OSA diagnosis. This was after I was exposed to oil based paint at work that I got sick from. I can't be around swimming pools either and the list goes on. Anything new pretty much has to be outgassed - time will vary - the Respironics masks rake forever to outgas.

There are a group of people online who claim they are allergic to corn and this is what is causing the problem. For me it is all petrochemicals whether they are made from corn or petroleum. A clean diet will help - eliminate as many additives and processed foods that you can and go simple in living with basic cleaning supplies (vinegar, baking soda, borax for example), change laundry detergent, and of course stay away from anything "scented" - watch the unscented stuff too as sometimes they just mask the fragrance with another fragrance.

Count me in as another one with sensitivity to fragrances--causes headaches and triggers asthma for me. Even my so-called "unscented" deoderant has fragrance listed as an inactive ingredient??? Fortunately, that one doesn't bother me much.

At work I have to keep my office door closed all the time, and still have difficulties if someone in the outer office decides to use scented hand lotion or wear perfume--the ventilation system picks it right up. I attend a religious congregation that prints on EVERY document that the congregation's campus is a scent-free environment but people still reek of fragrance. I'm uncomfortable at most events for that reason--and when I get home, whatever I was wearing has to be changed because the fragrance clings to my clothing. So much for scent free.

Same with my Kaiser health care center. Signs everywhere asking people to please not wear fragrance at that facility. Every month I give a presentation there with one of the physicians who reeks of perfume. Ugh!

I take daily meds (steroid inhaler and Singulair) and I'm supposed to carry my rescue inhaler with me. When I have a little cold, exposure to a fragrance bomb can trigger a full-blown bronchitis. It's very frustrating, but I cannot live in a bubble. CPAP has been wonderful, because breathing that clean, filtered air all night really helps. Sometimes I wish I could use it in public places where everyone is reeking of industrialized scents.

Even if you take your wife's fragrance to an Allergist, you might end up receiving shots to deal with your reaction to it. It does not pay.

I am also sensitive to such smells. But not to such a degree as you and Janknitz. I remember one time when my wife and I ended up sitting at a live concert of classical music behind such lady. We left in the intermission.

I'm very happy you are back with good news about your health, wonderful. I understand you very well, me too I have hard time with parfumes, cigarette's smell and diesel fumes. Those things produce on me an allergic rhinitis, I use almost daily a steroid's spray to keep my sinuses opened. It's very good you are in the good path to find the root of your problems. A lot of the times, it's the propellant itself and not the product that is the culprit. In my case, there are certain things that seem to suck the air from my lungs (gasoline fumes, diesel exhaust, clorox) along with a lot of aerosols. I carry a surgical mask in my purse so I'm always ready in case I'm stuck in traffic behind a stinky bus. You could try allergy tests but odds are it's a sensitivity and not a true allergy. That pounding headache is the worst!. I clean only with steam, no aerosols in my house except Lysol rarely. I put all my candles that I used to burn on mug warmers now in their containers and find the scent is much lighter and doesn't bother me at all. I wear perfume daily, feel naked without it but can only use a few scents. I guess we all have our triggers.

Glad to hear you are still around.

The current software seems to be working very well for the data from my S9. Are there problems I should look for?

I have also been out of the loop for the last couple of months: my problem is work.

Hopefully the load will ease up in the next few weeks and I will try to look at the CMS50 stuff.

Tipping my hat to you /Jedimark. You have done some fine work under the circumstances.

I don't claim to have anything close to what you have but after smoking cigarettes for 39 yrs - I am not sure if it was when I started cpap or quitting the cigarettes that I determined I was allergic to dust. While not the nature of your problem dust is everywhere.

They say your body changes every 7 yrs. I never had any pollen allergies until I had my brain aneurysm. So I wonder if some on my problem is related to other meds or just that guy messin with my brain?

If I can relate another story - when I traveled a lot for work I remember (before having allergies) when flying one time; right after the pilot announced to fasten your seat belts. The lady in front of me decided to spray this God awful smelling perfume ALL over herself and the rest of us.

I thought that was not only rude but cruel and unusual punishment.
