dry mouth

Post by tm4golf » Sat Mar 24, 2012 3:30 pm

I am new to the cpap world, started about a month ago. I am using a resmed quatro full face mask because I am a mouth breather. Anyway I have been having much difficulty with dry mouth during the night, so much so that it wakes me up and inevitably I take off the mask. I am using the humidifier set to 5 any higher and I get a gurgly puddle at the bottom of the hose.

Can I train myself to be a nose breather?
Is there anything that works to keep the mouth somewhat moist during the night?

Looking for any suggestions.

Try Biotene mouthwash. A friend of mine puts a moist washcloth inside her mask.

Some full face mask users actually resort to using a chin strap to help limit the mouth opening.

Some people just have a drier mouth than others...or mouth breathe a lot....or takes some meds that might add to the drying effect.
Someone mentioned the Biotene products..they have a couple designed to help keep the mouth moist (as much as possible). Of course the standard...hydrate yourself well with water will apply.

It's tough...there is no easy solution.

What machine and humidifier do you use? You mention higher than 5 setting causes rain out gurgling..
Some machines have heated hoses that will warm the air and allow higher humidity levels but the heated hose part prevents rain out.

Hello & Welcome, tm4golf! Glad you found this forum—SO much useful info and everyone here is so willing to help!
You're lucky to have found this forum as you begin CPAP—took me almost year before I found this place and, with the help of folks here, got my CPAP therapy working as it should. Many of us have to figure out a way to deal with dry mouth. Biotene also makes a spray that might be helpful.
