Sinus Burn

Post by roztom » Wed Mar 08, 2006 3:36 pm

Hi:

I'm a 3 week newbie and my sinuses are starting to rebel.

I have been alternating between the Swift and an Mirage Nasal Mask. The last 4 days my sinuses have been bothering me (rarely have sinus issues, so this is CPAP related) so I switched to only my Nasal mask since it is easier on my sinuses than the Swift.

I tried upping my HH to 4, still my sinuses are ticked off. Is it possible that the HH is too high?

Any recommendations ?

Thanks,

Tom

I have the same problem right now. I have had sinus "burn" two or three times in the 5+ weeks I have been using it. It seems to pass but it does confuse me.

Any feedback? I have it today. it came on later as it got rainy. Last night was the first night "taped". Yes, I am on the road to become a Tapir (sic) [I really chuckled at RG's interchange]. I wonder if this has anything to do with it? I know it was the first night I was sure that I did not have mouth leaks.

Hey, roztom and aswab, my sinuses sympathize with yours. Feel like the inner workings of your face have been use as a wind tunnel........the object being to study the effects of gale force winds upon the more delicate areas of the human anatomy. If you find a good remedy, let me know.

I would have thought it would have been worst in the very beginning as oppossed to being bad right now.

What is the best treatment? Saline wash? Other suggestions?

Thanks,

Tom

I've been using CPAP for four years now and have found my heated humidifier the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to sinus problems. I run mine on three. I had run it as high as 5, but that really didn't seem to give any greater benefit, and I would empty the resevoir.

There were a couple of times, like when I had a cold or on those really cold nights where the humidity in the house would be exceptionally low, that I would use Ayr Gel. Great stuff. It is a saline gel that you coat the insides of your nostrils with and it keeps them lubricated through the night. CAUTION: since it is a saline gel, it WILL burn when you put it on tender nostrils. Learned that one the hard way.

Hope this helps.

Raising the temperature on my humidifier helped my sinuses a lot.

When I went from a full face mask to the swift I started feeling more of a "burn" or pain around the inner edge of my nostrils due to the swift expanding and touching sesitive areas near the the opening of the nostril.

I found that using Simply Saline gel (I got mine at Walgreen's) for a few weeks helped in the adjustment process, as well as helping get a good seal on the Swift. Also the first few weeks it helped to apply the gel a little deeper to help the burn. I'm at the point now where I rarely need to use it as the nostrils seem to adapt.

There was a another gel with a different name that I used initially, but I found that it caused a burning sensation and sneezing. Can't remember the name of that one. Simply Saline also contains Aloe Vera which is problably good.

The nasal Gel sounds like somethign I need to try, I have had my unit for one week now and every night I have taken it off because it was bothering my nostrils, either with the burning sensation or just didn't seem to fit right.
I ahve only been able to get in 14.8 hours since Monday.

I found the AYR saline nasal gel at a Walgreens by me. It was on sale for $3.99 vs. $4.99 reg.

The SImply Saline which also has Aloe Vera was also there at the same price. I made the leap and invested in 2 tubes of AYR.

Talk about a long term commitment.
