http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22232016 indicates that there are no benefits of the B vitamins on cognition/dementia/Alzheimer's disease. However, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21784352 suggests that reducing homocysteine levels (which folic acid does) may reduce the risk of dementia. Scrolling through other abstracts on PubMed suggests that folic acid may indeed be helpful in preventing dementia. I will not make any comment on the dose that should be used other than to take a multivitamin and eat a balanced healthy diet each day to ensure a good mix of all the vitamins.

A quick search of PubMed indicates that folic acid is not going to have an effect on sleep apnea, but it may help with some of the conditions that are often associated with untreated sleep apnea. Again, a good multivitamin and a healthy balanced diet should provide the vitamins that are needed.

Thanks Sleepytoo2, i have been seaching the the topic on the webb, and there does seem to be some indication for the benefits of folic acid supplements. separate findings from Bristol university in the UK, Canada, and the US, are all positive on the benefits. A simple daily dose of 5 mg of folic acid, cheap as chips from the chemist, can have a beneficial effect. Now if i can just remember how to post this.

I think I saw something about it on Dr Newports website... http://www.coconutketones.com/importantlinks.html
I'm not sure where since she has included so much information. It may have been under the blog tab, under the supplements that Steve takes.

My Rhuematologist has me on folic acid because the medication I take can cause my hair to fall out. She said the folic acid will aid in hair growth. As far as Dementia... well I'm not sure...

From what I read if your folic acid level is low and you are successful in bringing it up with supplements - then - it might help stave off dementia a bit.

My anti-dementia regimen for today includes:

Another 16,000 steps (this will be day three - trying for an average for the month of 10,000 steps a day as recommended - 85% last summer hoping for 100% this summer).

Will walk a different path and so stimulate my brain.

Will stay away from TV so I do not drag my brain down.

Will eat well, stay away from sugar, and perhaps include some turmeric (contains curcumin) along with the pepper to activate the curcumin. I need to re-myelinate some of the pathways in my brain due to damage from OSA.

Plan for doing some strength training later in the week.

Try to become a bit more social.

Have a lot of fun!!!
