S9 VPAP Adapt failure / backup machine

Post by Bright Choice » Thu Mar 15, 2012 2:54 pm

My S9 VPAP Adapt failed during the night last night.

The good news is that even with a chin strap and tape over my mouth I didn't asphyxiate myself. Personally, I have never worried about that, but there are so many discussions here about asphyxiation I thought that I'd just point out that I am warm, breathing and able to write this post.

I woke up during the night, for whatever reason I don't know, but went to bathroom, got back in bed to hook up the machine and found it was not working properly. I did a number of trials to get it going but it would run through the climateline check, humidifier check, SD card check and then the blower would start. The blower would work for 2 or 3 breaths and then it would shut off. Then I tried it with the mask off of my face and found that the blower would keep on blowing until I put the mask on and then it would shut off, show the Resmed logo and start the whole cycle over again. Tried a number of times but could not get it going properly. I am curious as to whether or not this has happened to any of my ASV friends.

Lots of good new here, amazingly the DME has a replacement and is bringing it to me. That is particularly amazing because I live in a pretty small community with a small DME 2 hours away and the ASV is not such a popular machine that a backup could be hard to locate in a hurry. The other good news is, that thanks to advice posted here on CPT, I do have a VPAP Adapt SV backup machine. Phew! So, I pulled it out of the closet and was good to go. No anxiety about trying to sleep without my pap, especially important for me right now as I am on a boatload of pain killers and muscle relaxants for back problems (origin as yet TBD) and I know that they all depress my respirations.

The other great thing about having the backup is that I did have to make an emergency trip to the ER the other night and was quite sure they would keep me overnight. So, I pulled my already fully supplied backup pack from the shelf and we were off to ER. So much better than being in a panic trying to get to the hospital quickly while trying to tell DH how to get all of my "regular" pap supplied packed up.

So, thanks to all here who have given such good advice. Before I found my backup, I was pretty nervous about not having one, but I thought what the heck, the S9 VPAP Adapt was new August '11 - so what are the chances of it breaking down? Well, I guess I now know the answer to that. It looks like the $200 (yes, $200) I spent for the backup was worth every penny. Found it on Craigslist.

BTW, I am waiting for DME to come with new machine and decided to download data in case they don't want to swap cards. I find that there is no "detailed data" for the last 3 or 4 weeks. I download all data every week so I am wondering what's up with that.

BC, sorry to hear of these difficulties your having, both health and equipment. So far my like machine has worked perfectly since last July. I'm curious if a restart might straighten yours out. If you wish to try. Unplug from wall, wait a minute or so, pull card out, reinsert card, plug power back in and note if it boots up properly. Please let us know. Good luck, Dan

Dan - That is a great idea. If I had had half a brain last night I might have thought of that, and I have a hunch that it probably would have fixed the situation. Perhaps I jumped the gun a bit because I knew I had the backup at hand. The DME had already replaced the ASV when I saw your reply. They were mighty quick and I am impressed. At least with the replacement I won't have to worry that something might be wrong with it. If it happens again, which I doubt, I will give that a try first.

Thanks for your good wishes. I think the docs "almost" have a handle on what's wrong with my back. Hopefully a "fix" is on the way and I will be back on my feet soon. Good to hear from you. I hope you are doing well.

Sorry about the back pain. I do understand it can be a pain in the back ... odd how we take that saying for granted, but it clearly indicates that many, many others share your frustration. Glad to hear that you hope the doctors are narrowing their search .. and might get it under better control.

Also glad to hear that you had your backup and it was able to tide you through that weird episode. It's one reason why being a active patient makes a difference.

Hope your new system will serve you better!

John - thanks so much. You are always so helpful. I don't even want to imagine how tough it would be without the support and knowledge of all of the contributers here. You are very special!
