Perfect numbers but still tired at lunchtime?

Post by Matty332 » Sun Mar 04, 2012 2:34 am

G'day,

I now observe %100 compliance with CPAP! I get on average from 10-8 hours sleep with the CPAP and my mask fit (on RESMED S9) indicates smiley and my AHI is down to 2. My blood pressure is normal and my mind is slowly healing, with the occasional relapse (you get that with mental illness - YAY!).

I am STILL waiting to see my specialist, the appointment is on the 15th of March. I have to wait to then to see what kind of new machine to get because of possible obesity hyperventilation syndrome - although I KNOW it isn't as bad now because I don't wake up feeling drugged as bad as it was before and the tingling in my fingers has lessened considerably.

I have a question, with all these perfect numbers - I am trying to figure out why I get tired at lunchtime around 1-2pm? It is chronic tiredness with excessive yawning that lasts till about 4pm. I have brain fog during that time as well.

Has anyone heard of these patterns before? Anyone else had strange tiredness at lunchtime that goes away in a couple of hours? What was yours caused by?

Thanks again!

-Matty

You don't mention if you have that feeling before or after eating lunch... if it's afterward, and your lunch was heavy on carbs as well as there being a lot of it, it's very likely that you'll feel sleepy afterward - a lighter lunch with fewer carbohydrates can make all the difference, though of course it could still be related to OSA and cpap.

Hey Julie,

It is before I eat, sometimes after - sometimes I miss lunch and feel the same way. I always have breakfast BTW...

Why don't you post your stats and graphs so people can help you understand what is happening at night.
Also you have only been on this for less the 2 months. You have years of damage to repair and it won't happen over night.

Sounds like blood sugar issues to me. Ask your doctor about insulin resistance.

I was having similar problems and falling asleep at traffic lights driving home at 5pm. My sleep neurologist prescribed Nuvigil and it helps a lot! Not perfect, but a help.

In addition to the other suggestions, it's good to remember that successful xpap therapy doesn't cure all of our health issues, but it does take away one set of issues (sleep deprivation, etc.) and allows us to start digging down and fixing other things. We can't heal or fix things as long as we are sleep deprived, so that's the first step.

Some people are lucky and all they need is xpap and better sleep over time; some people need to dig more and deal with metabolic and other issues that can finally rise to the surface once the OSA is successfully treated. Think of this like an onion--you've successfully peeled off the top layer by treating your OSA (although, as others have suggested, there may be things about your treatment that can be tweaked and improved and that may be all you need). Now there are other layers of things to examine and maybe fix. There are some studies out there that found a connection between metabolic syndrome and people who are chronically sleep deprived (whether by OSA or by choice); metabolic syndrome encompasses multiple body systems.

Once I took away the exhaustion caused by chronic and severe sleep deprivation, my body could start to heal and I've been able to start addressing other issues. It's a journey and the destination often seems to keep shifting, but bit by bit things are improving. At least I can see progress now; I've been trying to improve energy and overall health for decades and nothing worked--now I know it is because underneath everything, I was severely and chronically sleep deprived because of OSA.

Hang in there! You've done the best first step by using your machine.

Hey everyone,

Thanks heaps for the thoughts!

I am determined to get through this.

Here are some oximetry reports from last night..

I wish I could properly read these. They are over a five hour period. Can anyone make sense of them?

Your sample shows just less than 5 hours of sleep - I'd be tired the next day if that's all I got.
