Super dirty air

Post by Jaylee » Thu Mar 01, 2012 9:58 pm

We are remodeling our house and dust is flying everywhere. I am dusting and vaccuming and mopping like crazy, but my white filters on my machine are getting dirty so fast now. I have the white allergy filter on and the regular black one, but is there anything else I can do to help keep my air clean at night? My allergies are really acting up now thanks to this. My bathroom looks awesome, though. Next up is a new kitchen.

I think I would take apart a furnace filter and cover the machine to protect the intake.

That is a good idea. I try to keep it covered during the day, but I still have to clean daily just to keep on top of things. I will be glad when it is over and everything is painted and put back together again.

Not that I have a solution, but your work may be kicking up mold also. One good thing as the filter gets dirty it removes even small particles, I change the filters every three weeks, or sooner if I notice the air output heating up (a show of restriction to air flow). Also I keep the door to the bedroom closed 24/7 and the furnace vent closed. I also have a window A/C that I run even in the winter. Jim

Another note.
When you change or clean your machine filter...
Disconnect the hose and run the machine for a minute.
When I have done the "flick" to clean as my DME instructed, I felt particles hit the back of my throat when I first turned it on.
Now I always run air through it with the hose detached before I mask up.

How about putting the CPAP inside a large cardboard box with a large piece of cloth, like maybe flannel, over a large hole? Tape or clamp it in place so you get a reasonably tight seal. The idea behind a large cloth filter is that it will catch the big stuff, won't get dirty so quick, and with a large area the air can move through it easier. I really don't think you will starve the blower air supply at all.

i am also in the process of having renos done to my home, tearing out old carpet and installing radiant in-floor heat, new hardwood and also new windows & doors. That threw up a fair amount of dust, but I found that with vigilant vaccuming when the workers left at the end of the day, as well as using my portable air cleaner (which I always use for allergies), I've been able to keep my CPAP filters fairly clean, olny changing every 10 - 12 days. Good luck with the renos, it's all worth it in the end!

If you can close off the bedroom while the work is being done, that should help some.
A standalone air cleaner (with filters) is probably your best bet.
If you have to dust or vacuum in the bedroom, cover the machine.
I would make a box out of small furnace filters to put around the rear of the machine.

Hang old wet sheets around the area work is being done in and in front of any opening to rooms you want to keep clean. Wet seems to catch the dust better then dry.

I like the idea of a furnace filter. The 3m allergy one seems very well pleated and I think you could just wrap it around the thing or wrap it like a present -- just don't spill the water!

Another choice is throw it in a pillow case.
