New mask from Paykel didn't work at all

Post by noSLEEPforYOU » Fri Feb 24, 2012 1:48 pm

I have struggled for a month with my last mask finally get two new ones and the results were bad. My face wasn't designed for these masks so I don't know what to do now.'
I tried on over twenty masks with pressure and most leaked bad. I brought the two that didn't leak home. I used the Paykel last night and the sleepyhead leak photo is the result.
I will try the Liberty mask tonight. I know there are a other companies but apparently the companies designed every mask for the same shape face.

Have you tried making a liner yet? I was plagued with leaks due to my high pressure. My Quattro was the best thus far, but still leaked enough to annoy the crap out of me. It still leaks some, but I can't feel it. My machine also says the leak is an acceptable number.

Thus far I've tried
Quattro FX Medium
Quattro FX Small
Hybrid
Comfort Gell FFM
Mirage Quattro Medium
Mirage Quattro SMall

I'm waiting on a Forma from my DME (I've been waiting for two and a half weeks..) I've been buying masks from Cpap.com with insurance to try to find something worthwhile. Thus far my Small Quattro seem to be a winner. I'm currently sporting an APAP range of 18-20 as far as pressure goes.. Now I just need to solve my burping issue.. heh

Yes I have tried various materials and nothing has worked. The liberty mask seemed to work at the DME but I will have to try it tonight.
I can't believe it's this hard to find a mask that fits. The therapist said she has never had a problem like this before.

You could be losing therapy through your mouth...it would show up on sleepyhead as bad leaks. Using the mask liners stop leaks about 90% of the time. If you have tried "over twenty masks", you have tried most companies already. I think you said that your pressure was 17. You might try reducing the pressure a little and see if that helps.

I am using full face masks because of sinus problems. The mask leaks all over especially around my cheeks. The machine can't keep up with the amount of leaks, so therapy has eluded me. The 17 cm of pressure is fixed because that's how much pressure it took to maintain my airway.
There are many companies out there that I haven't tried. The DME carries the entire line of four companies. I don't know if I will have any better results with another company.
I would think they would design the masks so that you don't need additional material to seal the air.

Comment,

The Forma mask by Fisher Peykel is like their full face FlexiFit #432 mask except it has a forehead adjustable support. The #432 which has a felt inside the Silicone cushion did not work for me because of leaks. But the #431 which has only the Silicone cushion with no felt works OK for me up to a pressure of 17 cm with leaks below 24 Lit/min (the red line on the ResScan graph).

Have you tried one of the total face masks yet? Phillips Respironics makes the total and the fitlife. They cover they entire face and might work for you.

I modified the mask a little and it works better. However last night I forgot to replace the memory card and the machine only went to 13. I slept all the way through but now have a serious headache. So I know that apnea is causing my dizziness, memory problems, fatigue etc. The problem is getting any mask to work with 17 cm of pressure.

It's really tough to find a mask that will immediately fit all face shapes - hence this forums' members coming up with some amazing 'fixes' for leaks.

You might look at padacheek.com and see what Karen has come up with for your mask.

Sometimes it just takes some time and patience to get a mask to work just right. Even after being at this for over a year, I still spend a few minutes watching tv in bed while tweaking my mask so it feels comfortable, but snug. I just can't slap it on, lay down and go to sleep.

I have 4 masks, three of which I circulate. Two nasal pillows, a SleepWeaver, then a Mirage Liberty which I haven't used since first Dx'd, but keep in case I ever get a bad cold.

Hang in there - very few people have instant success!

cheers,
xena
