Auto adjusting resmed problems help!

Post by Sam33 » Mon Feb 20, 2012 11:57 pm

My husband has an adjustable resmed machine.. He uses a resmed mask.. He rate is adjusted between 4-18. It adjusts through the night... But it takes an hour or so before he stops snoring... Or hitting himself..
The mask doesn't leak.. I don't even bother going to bed for atleast an hour after he does..
I'd like to know how to help him.. He is relatively new to cpap.. He is starting to
Backslide.. As he is falling asleep the minute he sits down.. Any help or advice would be good
Thanks!

You have to review the data. Get a program and let it show you what is going on. It could be the pressure is wrong, the ramp time is too slow, there are leaks you are noticing. All sorts of things.

Hi, I'm sure some others will chime in shortly. It would be very helpful if you'd (register and ) go into your profile, equipment info and input your hubby's equipment and mask. Use TEXT format. You can follow the Newbies link in my signature to do that.
Meanwhile, it soulds like a typical case of the range needing to be tightened up to reduce the time it takes to get to therapy pressure for him. If you would look at the pressure indicated on the screen when he begins to quit snoring, it may give you a better rough bottom number. We can tell you how to make that change one we have the specific model info (like S8 or S9 auto elite or autoset or escape).
Eventually you will want to get into downloading info with software to look in detail at his pressure and leak data to see what is actually going on. With the support you will get here, Y'all can be both sleeping better before too long. Hang in there and meanwhile read up on the info for New Users at the top if the page.

He's lucky to have you watching out for him. Often adjustments need to be made as the body adjusts to CPAP. In the meantime while you learn about monitoring his therapy (and your personal observations are invaluable) you may want the DME, or the doctors office to download his data and take a look. The other advice you got was good. This certainly bears follow up.
Good luck, please keep us posted.

Husband is lucky to have you. Pressure range of 4-18 is very wide. He may need to narrow that by using a minimum pressure close to his prescribed pressure during sleep study if he had one.
Starting at pressure of 4, it would take some time for the machine to respond to events to supply the pressure required to suppress his apneic or hypoxic events. He may be snoring after falling asleep because the starting pressure is not high enough to overcome the closing or narrowing of his airways.
For example, my prescribed pressure is 14. I have my auto cpap set at 13 to 16 with a ramp starting pressure of 7 and ramp time of 10 minutes. By 10 minutes, my pressure is at a minimum of 13 and then stays between 13 and 16 the entire night based on AHI.

Thanks everyone..
He doesn't have a card as it was collected by the company so they could check data. I did however look more closely at the machines data... He is averaging a 15.8 so i changed the start
Ramp to 7.. His h# (I domt remember the initials and dont want to bother him as he just went to bed) is 48..
He is currently snoring.. But seems calmer.. I guess you are all
Right.. As you would be with all your experience your belts...
I have to call the company and get the card back..
I have again checked his mask.. All secure and no leaks..
He does use an an average of 6.2 hours a night and that has been the average since day one..
Thanks again for all your help.. I think I'll be tapping into your experteise often!

I have now created a user name and profile you can help better equip my husband with the tools to adjusting to cpap.. Or autocpap.. I'm blessed to have found this forum as I'm starting to feel helpless.
Thank you all

You don't have to wait until the company returns the data card. Your hubby's machine uses a standard 1 or 2 gig SD card. It won't take the newer SDHC cards, but if you look you should still be able to find an SD card for sale at a place like Office Depot or even Target or Walmart.

Just push the new SD card into the slot on the back of the machine. It will write the summary data that is stored on-board the machine to the empty card. And it will start recording the detailed data directly to the card the first time hubby uses the machine after you put the card into it.
