TODAY Show with Sleep apnea piece

Post by Pad A Cheek » Tue Feb 28, 2006 7:37 am

Hi All
This morning the Today show had a piece on Sleep Apnea and Dr. Chediak from the Mt. Sinai Sleep Disorder Center in Miami did a decent job of explaining about Sleep Apnea and its causes and the CPAP machine and treatments. The doctor did explain that it is not only a problem for the obese, but that normal sized people also sometimes have it.

Matt Lower actually put on a Swift headgear, although not with the machine hooked up to it.

I think they did a pretty good piece actually.
I am glad to see national information being spread on sleep apnea. This will do much to get the word out for people who suffer from it and now will perhaps know they should seek treatment. More people sleeping well is a great thing.

Karen

Thanks to your heads-up, Karen, I caught it, too. I did have one question, though, as to what the doctor said and I'm sure someone here has the answer, as always.

They stated that the reason these people who were showcased were suffering from exhaustion/fatigue (as with other OSA sufferers, too) was due to not getting into deep REM sleep. I remember reading on this site, in the early stages of being a member here, that Stages 3 and 4 were the restorative sleep stages. So what is the answer to that? Is it 3, 4 and REM, just REM, 3 and 4 without REM?

The piece was very succinct and brought up very salient points about OSA. I think it was very well done, also. Thanks for mentioning it to me before I would have missed it, Karen.

Anyone know about what time this aired? I am watching it on the west coast, it is now 7:11 am. Wanted to see if I missed it. Thanks.

I saw this segment and am due for a new mask. Can this be used with a respironics machine? I am a restless sleeper and the the nose mask is causing cysts to appear above my eyes, near the nose ( just where the mask sits). I am starting to use it less and less.

As was expained to me: Delta sleep is to the body (resting and restorative) what REM is to the brain. Both are necessary.

BTW, I caught the segment on my DVR and can dub to DVD if anyone really wants it.

And, if there are any engineers out there: any idea how to elminate a ground loop problem that is causing a rolling band when capturing video from the DVR? I solved the audio ground loop problem with something from Radio Shack.

PM me with your address and I can make one for you. Also, specify your preferred format. I can make a DVD, or generate a (lower-res) AVI, Mpeg or .WMV onto a CD as you choose.

Video editting is a hobby. Just did a music video the other night of a wedding to add as bonus material to the wedding DVD I'm editting. It's available online if anyone is interested; just PM me.

Hmmm .... no Matt Lauer "worn" mask for PAP on Ebay -- a sad day indeed!
