Dry mouth with a FFM

Post by btown » Sun Jan 22, 2012 6:55 am

I think the biggest issue i have is my mouth opening in my ffm and my subsequent awakening with a bone dry mouth. Is lip taping my only hope here?

Taping could help, and there are a number of posts on the topic which give you all sorts of helpful tips.
The other thing to consider is whether you are mouth breathing because of nasal congestion.
If so, you may need to try to correct that problem. I tend to get sinus infections and use a neti pot fairly regularly. I also use flonase which is a Rx nasal steroid spray that acts locally over time. Both of these remedies have helped my tendency towards chronic nasal congestion. So that issue is definitely worth addressing. I've been using a FFM for just over a year now and I believe that over time I have learned to breathe through my nose now. I rarely wake with a dry mouth and that was not always the case.

You can try upping the humidifier setting. You can also ask your pharmasist for a mouthwash to help with the dry mouth, there are a few different ones out there.

The whole purpose of having a full face mask is so you can breathe through your mouth, if necessary. Taping is more commonly used with nasal or nasal pillow masks to prevent the mouth from opening (and air coming out).

Could you perhaps be rolling onto your back and spending too much time in that position? Many people mouth breathe more on their backs... If that is the case, maybe a strategy to try to remain on your side might help.

As someone else said above, more humidification could help as well.

I wake up every morning with dry mouth also... but I don't use my humidifier... one less thing to mess with. Is the dry mouth a problem? I've gotten use to it. Up the humidifier setting if you can't tolerate it.

I recently started having problems with dry mouth waking me up, I know when I turn up the humidifier my nose will stuff up...so I tried an experiment that has been mentioned lots...mouth taping...a few weeks ago I put a pretty good slice in my finger and picked up a box of XL Curad Flexible Athletic Strips ( 2" x 4" ).....so I used one to fit over my mouth and it worked perfect, plus I didn't have any leakage around my mouth area.....another thing is you can use one of these things multiple times....FA

I think dry mouth is waking me up all the time. anyone else have this issue?
on the mirage quattro I think because the leaks are less you have much more dryness
I've started to use a room humidifier

I've also noticed that I wake up with the tubing unattached from the mask! I think you should tape the tubing to the mask.
