What is the best Apap machine

Post by noSLEEPforYOU » Sun Jan 15, 2012 2:04 pm

That's probably not that easy to answer but I don't want to get stuck with a brick or waste money on something I don't need.
I read a good article on here that recommended a machine that had efficacy data but what about noise and durability?

Is the Resmed S9auto with H5i the best machine?
My insurance will pay 100% but I am sure they won't replace a machine because I am not happy with it. I will probably have to deal with it for 2 yrs or pay to replace it myself.
So the medical supply people are going to call tomorrow I want to be able to tell them to bring ?? machine or I won't sign for it.

Any machine that records FULL data..and yes the s9 autoset is an excellent machine as is the PR system 1 auto with a flex.
Take a look at the machines at cpap.com, read all the info, they will show how noisy each machine is by the decibel levels if you are worried about noise.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

The ResMed S9 Autoset (don't confuse it with the S9 Escape Auto which offers minimal data)
is a great machine and if your DME uses a Resmed supply source you can request this machine.
Some DMEs use one of the other brand of suppliers, like Phillips Respironics, or Fisher & Paykel or Devilbiss.
If they don't normally stock the ResMed brand..they can order it if they would. Often they won't.

So if you have your heart set on ResMed S9 AutoSet they may or may not even have one in stock.

In the Phillips Respironics brand of machine...check the link in my profile. The PR System One Auto CPAP with AFlex is the name of their APAP machine. Not to be confused with their Auto IQ model which is their Pro model with auto mode limited to 30 days.

"Best" machine is hard to define. ResMed users are loyal and Respironics users are loyal and DeVilbiss users are loyal and will tell you theirs is the "best". Most people will do very well with any of the brands. There are a few people who might prefer one algorithm over another. Each brand goes about things a little differently.

Hands down THE Best APAP machine IS the one you have the software for.

Thanks to Jedimark that makes the one you can get for the least amount of money the Best machine.

Certainly data is a MUST - no sense having software if there is NO Data.

I have both top of the line machines, the S9 Autoset and the PR SystemOneAuto w/Aflex. They're both excellent and give good therapy. Both are very quiet and sturdy. Software is available for both. Each one has slightly different features which are no big deal (except that the S9 shows daily data on the LCD screen). The only real difference may be in the algorithms of the different machines so some people do better with one over the other. In my husband's case, he does OK with either machine according to data and how he feels but in experimenting these last few months, I'm leaning slightly towards the PR algorithm in his case which seems to better suited to his breathing pattern. Of course he started with the Respironics brand(M Series) over 3 years ago so it may be that's he's just better adjusted to that manufacturer's products. Either one would be my choice. Good luck.

PRS1 Auto or ResMed S9 AutoSet.

Don't say "S9 Auto." That could be the Escape Auto which gives a LOT less data. Some DMEs will try to scam you on this.

Do not accept any of the older models. No ResMed S8. No Respironics that doesn't say "Philips."

I think Fisher & paykel sleep style 254 auto, resmed S8 autoset and resmed S9 autoset are good Apap machine. My mother use resmed S8 autoset machine and she told me it is good and easy to use.

S8 machines use a proprietary data card that requires a special, hard to find card reader. They won't work with SleepyHead. S8 machines don't collect waveform data. Neither you nor your doctor will have the best data available to manage your therapy.

I don't think Fisher and Paykel makes their software available in the US anymore. I don't think SleepyHead will work with it yet.

The machines probably give good therapy apart from the data deficiencies.
