Hi ,
I am new to this group and also CPAP. I have had my Resmed S9 for one week , and since I was a mouth breather, getting CPAP has changed the way I sleep. I have to sleep with my mouth shut , for CPAP to be effective.
Has anyone else had similiar pain,etc...?
Thanks for all your help!

Re: Jaw/Face/Teeth pain
No you do not have to sleep with your mouth shut...that is what a full face mask is for. Go to cpap.com and take a look at that section of masks..there are lots. If you have face/jaw pain you have the mask way too tight and if you have teeth pain you are probably grinding or clenching your teeth. You need to add your equipment to your profile so that we can tell you exactly what you need to do. If you are grinding or clenching your teeth then you need to either stop that or get a boil and bite mouth guard........I broke 4 teeth because of clenching you don't want to see my dentist bill .
If you arn't familiar with a boil and bite, its the mouth guard used in sports, mine is a youth size, clear plastic and just goes on my uppers. As to full face masks, I use an Innomed Hybrid and a Mirage Quattro......not so much with the quattro as I prefer my hybrid.
Hope this helps...and welcome to the land of hose heads
Cheers
Nan

Hi, Canada,
There's probably several possible reasons.. mask too tight immediately comes to mind. To help you best, please follow the Newbies link in my signature and go into your profile. Add in your equipment as TEXT please.
What pressure are you using? Have you tried wearing the mask during the day watching TV, music or other activities to acclimate yourself to the mask? Once you give us a bit more to work with, I expect someone will have more specific ideas. Welcome to the forum! There's a lot of great resources, talent and knowledge here.

Hi ,
Thanks for the reply's. I posted the equipment that I have, and I run at a pressure of 7.
I have the right fit on my nasal pillow and after getting the right fit , it is not that bad.
What other information do you need?
Thanks again

I'm not the nasal pillows expert, so I'll pass and suggest you check out these links: google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=swift+FX+pillows++site%3Acpaptalk.com&pbx=1&oq=swift+FX+pillows++site:cpaptalk.comCanada75 wrote:Hi ,

Nan and I are in agreement: If you are grinding or clenching your teeth then you need to either stop that or get a boil and bite mouth guard........I also broke a tooth because of clenching, and it is NO fun! I now use an expensive nightguard for the night grinding .
Suggest you try either taping the mouth or using some kind of strap to hold your mouth closed.. then try it out during the day to play with the tightness on the pillows headgear. You want the least tension that will not leak. That should reduce the pains you have, though beware- now that you're SORE, it will take a few days or more to not be so sensitive.
Alternatively, a FFM may be an option for you. As you try things, check back in and somebody will chime in with different ideas.

Nohardmask--u r so-o-o right. Have extreme tooth pain. Cpap totally dries mouth. Yesterday dentist couldn't see tooth problems on X-ray and wants to replace fillings or root canal with crown or pull teeth to see IF that fixes problem. Dental schools need to keep up w/current medicine to include cpap related problems. I had to use my own gut instincts to figure this one out. People--u need to b more involved in making decisionsabout ur health problems. I've seen for myself docs do a guessing game at patient's expense when they can't figure out what problem is. to Nan--u r so-o-o wrong!

No it doesn't dry the mouth unless it is open. If you have a nasal mask IT SHOULD NEVER BE OPEN. If you have a full face mask use a chins strap. If your mouth is still dry use biotene.pookie wrote:Nohardmask--u r so-o-o right. Have extreme tooth pain. Cpap totally dries mouth. Re: Jaw/Face/Teeth pain
As said before, if you are used to sleeping with your mouth open and wish to continue, you will need a full face mask because you can't sleep with your mouth open using a nasal mask as I'm sure you've discovered. Open mouth can cause dry mouth but that can be a problem for open-mouthers with or without CPAP. What are you doing to keep your mouth closed? That may be causing the pain you are experiencing.
