Belly full of air?

Post by erwink » Fri Dec 02, 2011 3:40 am

Ugg. Just woke up....belching like crazy - my belly seems to be really full of air! Is this normal?

This adjustment is killing me.

Did go back to dr - we've now added a chinstrap to my repetoire....I still haven't been able to wear the mask for the entire nite, tho I did make it longer than before the chinstrap. I'm getting discouraged - I had had fantasies about how this might change my life, but now I seem to be sleeping less/worse than ever.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Kim

do a search on aerophagia.

This has about a zillion posts.
It is simply ingested AIR, not metabolic smelly gas from metabolism.

Sometimes is is worse than others, but not a problem with most.

It is NOT relieved by antigas products such as mylanta and beano and the simethicone products.
Many calim it is effective, but I doubt this.
The stories go olike this.
I took mylanta etc and I feel much better.

Perhaps so, but not related.

What are your pressure settings on your S9?
I have only had this problem when my max pressure was set higher than I needed so I backed it down and the problem went away.

I had this problem before too, and your body will adjust somewhat. I found that when I was on the FFM it was worse, but when I closed my mouth and tried to breath through my nose it didn't happen much.

Now that I am on the nasal pillows, I haven't had it hardly at all.

Thanks for the comments.... This adjustment is SOOOOOO much harder than I anticipated. My sleep study with the mask was pretty good, so I figured my transition would be relatively easy and it has been a nightmare. I'm very discouraged.

Just to let you know Kim a lot of us have been where you are now, including myself....totally frustrated and wondering if you'd be better off not using cpap. At least you could sleep before right? You didn't mention how long you've been trying but hang in there. Try different masks or ask your dr about pressure changes or whatever. A lot of people here know a lot more than me. I have occassional aerophagia also but I am wearing a chinstrap now and for the most part, it has gone away. I've also adjusted to cpap to the point where most nights I sleep soundly for 7 - 8 hrs. It does get better

I had painful aerophagia during most of the first month I was on CPAP. Now not at all. I didn't make any changes in my pressures. Some members have found it helpful to raise the head of the bed on blocks. Have you tried training your tongue to rest on the roof of your mouth while sleeping? It was pretty easy to learn. That makes it less likely for air to enter esophagus. Don't give up. It does get better. I know it is discouraging right now. Hang in there.

Kim,

I'm 70+ days into my treatment so I know what you are going through. It does get better. The best thing I can tell you is keep a positive attitude. Your attitude is one thing you can control and it makes a HUGE difference when you are having challenges.

Also, always remember that this group is always here 24/7. So when it is 2am and you are frustrated (like I have been) come here and chances are somoene else will be here too and can talk you through it.

John

Aerophagia can be quite distressing and uncomfortable. I remember it. Been a long while since I've had a bout of it and I think I have to get into exactly the right (or wrong) position at a certain time in my sleep cycle to experience it. Extremely rare nowadays (been a hose head for probably 15 years now at least).

Now I find it kind of entertaining when it happens. I'm sure the rest of my family finds it equally so...
