Air blowing on spouse (mask recommendation)

Post by LXJenkins » Thu Nov 10, 2011 4:49 pm

Can anyone recommend a nasal pillow mask that doesn't blow air directly on one's spouse? My mask, which I otherwise love, shoots air out on my spouse if I happen to turn and face her while sleeping (I sleep on my side). It seems to me that there should be a mask that discharges air upward so that this isn't a problem.

Uh, oh! My wife is at it again. She loves it because I do not snore or stop breathing anymore but hates the air blowing on her back. Especially in the winter. My sleep doc suggested she wear turtle neck sweaters to bed.

Seriously, LX....this was a big topic here just a few weeks ago. Some said they put pillows between them and their spouse. My wife pulls the covers up around her neck. I don't know of a mask that doesn't blow air either up or down from the mask.

There are some masks (whose names I have forgotten) that diffuse the air better. You might check on this thru cpap.com.

I have had all kinds of masks and they all blew so badly on my dh that we had to sleep with a barrier between us. Then I started using a Resmed Mirage FX nasal mask. The exhaust disperses very gently and we no longer need a barrier between us. We can't lie really close together face to face but I'm really happy to have the barrier gone.

I love the mask too. It is the only one that fits decently, is very lightweight, low profile and does not awaken me with leaks.

Yep, I do the pillow thing, just before it's lights out I put an extra pillow between us, and that does the trick.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Hi,
We have a king sized bed so that helps, lol. We sleep with one of those small, striped, travel pillows between our sleeping pillows. I have to have it far enough away from my face so the air doesn't bounce back on me. Sometimes hubby will shove it over toward me and I just shove it back and tell him to move over. lol I mean, there's lots of room!

The exhaust vent on the Headrest nasal pillows mask won't blow toward the bed partner at all.

The Swift LT nasal pillows has the vent pointing in a more upward direction when you pass the hose over your head and use the clamp provided with the headgear.

Cheers,

I don't know who designed that Swift FX vent, but they should be taken out and shot. The airflow is almost inescapable!

I do find it helps to hang the hose overhead. Those holes angle down at a 45 degree angle, so by hanging the hose they flow up and out away from you at a 45 degree angle. If your spouse snuggles a little lower in the bed she may be able to avoid the blast. We have a king sized bed and I almost always sleep facing the other direction (the better to spoon with, my dear!), so it hasn't been much of a problem for my husband.

If it's not my exhaust, it comes from the other side of the bed.
I'm shopping for long sleeve jammies.
If he complains, maybe I'll kick the bottoms on the floor.

Just tell her she is lucky you let her sleep on the bed in the first place. Okay, I'm just kidding... we aren't in the middle east.

You must not block or impede the vent otherwise you may end up re breathing your own air.
That said on my Swift FX mask I've been able to loosely tape a small piece of very porous filter material (From an air conditioner filter, although some others are using inlet filter material which is a lot finer) over the vent holes. This completely eliminates the air blast.

I've been using this air diffuser for over a year now with great results, it completely eliminates the air blast.
There have been well deserved reservations from some people as to whether this may limit the air flow from the exhaust which would be very dangerous, I'm sure it doesn't but I can't prove that fact.

From a previous post on a different topic I've now realised that anyone that has a PR machine and the sleepyhead software can actually measure the total air leakage and hence see if this filter has any effect on air flow. I realise that you have a ResMed S9, but hopefully someone else can make this test.

Hey greg, you had already earned a Lab Rat Award trophy for your fly fishing rod hose hanger. Now here's your second award... a plaque... for your vent diffuser idea.

Greg... Does it increase the noise for the air blowing through? I know if I place my hand or pillow near the vents, the noise increases, just curious if your contraption does that as well.

The air diffuser is totally silent, I'm a front sleeper so my nose is always touching the sheets and I can't hear a thing.
