Help! I can't wake up in morning!

Post by jf00004 » Wed Nov 09, 2011 4:40 pm

Help! I can't wake up in morning!---I am having a rough time waking up in the morning, and I believe it is due to my sleep apnea condition. I use a CPAP machine regularly. I use three alarms to help me wake up, but nothing seems to do the trick. Worst of all, my job is now in jeopardy because of my regualr latess as a result. I've given my employer a doctor's note from my sleep specialist, and have tried to explain, my situation, but my employer is not very understanding. Does anyone with sleep apnea have a similar experience? Any recommendations?

When you say you use a CPAP 'regularly' - does that mean every night, all night and whenever else you sleep or nap?

Also, please go to your account and fill in the section for your equipment - select text instead of pics is preferable.

It's easier for others to advise you if we know what equipment you're using.

Hang in there - help is not far away.

Cheers,
xena

Go to bed earlier?
We really don't have enough information about what you are doing to offer any suggestions.

Thanks for the replies. I've tried going to bed earlier, but it doesn't work. Once I fall asleep, (around 10pm) that's it for me. I sleep pretty soundly with the CPAP machine every night. It's just getting up which is the problem. I don't know what CPAP pressure is set to, but I will check. I will also update my profile shorlty. I've had about 3 overnight studies since I was diagnosed about 2-3 years ago.

Please take a minute to go up to the User Control Panel (under search, top left) and then to your Profile and then Edit Equipment. Choose your gear from the pull down menus and the choose to show those in TEXT, not pictures. This will put your equipment at the bottom of every post your write automatically, like mine below. Those with the same equipment can help you better than having to constantly ask you what you use!

Once we know what machine/mask you are using we can get you into the clinician's mode so you can check the settings. If you don't have a copy of your sleep study and Rx, you really should get those for your records. Knowing your study results helps to understand the various issues that presented during that test. You may have had more hypopneas than apneas, you might have had more events while sleeping in certain positions, you may have had central apneas.... all these things are part of the big picture of your diagnosis.

You may be sleeping 'well,' but it could be you aren't getting the appropriate level of therapy to get you into the sleep stages needed for sound, restful sleep. You probably aren't getting much REM sleep which is the restorative phase of the sleep cycle. An overnight oximeter may help with the picture as well... if you are having desats below 88%, you may well be sleeping, but slowly and unconsciously suffocating as well. Until we have the full picture of what you have, what your settings are, and how you are doing...it is hard to guess.

Now, if it turns out you have a machine that is useless in giving any efficacy data.... you may need to lobby for a new machine that will provide you with the needed information. We will cross that bridge if we come to it...

And what time are you trying to get up by? And how long has this been a serious problem?

Have you reported the problem to your sleep doctor? And what did the doc say about it?

It may be a process of elimination to find out why you're too sleepy in the morning to wake up. Here's some things to consider.

1. Allowing enough hours for sleep?

2. Is treatment therapeutic? AHI & leak rate acceptable. Overnight oxygen monitor if indicated. No mouth breathing unless wearing a full face mask. Using machine during ALL sleep time.

3. Any meds that may be contributing to either poor quality sleep or residual sleepiness?

4. Any other sleep disorders? Any RLS or PLMD?

5. Any medical conditions that could contribute?

You might benefit from a sleep log to help identify trouble areas. Do you feel you are sleeping soundly or do you feel your sleep is light or restless?

I've noticed that a lot of alarm clocks only ring a short period of time and then quit. My dad had problems with this and I went out and found him an "alarm clock from hell" that was loud and rang for a LONG time, if not forever. It was actually a pretty cheap battery powered round analog clock that had external bells.

You might be able to find a clock radio that doesn't shut off after a while and set it to a "wake the dead" level.

Interesting,I had this problem before I started to use cpap. I simply wasnt getting proper sleep and I could not get out of bed sometimes till 10 am. Now with cpap I am often up at 7am.

If you are trying to get up in the dark, you might try what is called a "dawn simulator." Personally, I am quite light sensitive, and once the sun comes up, I am usually awake. I just bought one made by Phillps on Amazon, but you can get them elsewhere. I found that reading the reviews on Amazon on the different types and makes was quite informative.
