Weight gain 50+ days into CPAP??
Is it normal to start gaining weight with using CPAP? The reason I ask is my pants started getting tighter so I decided to weigh myself, and I have put on about 14 lbs. I'm not a big guy (not small either) but I have been 174 lbs for many years and now that I am getting better sleep it seems I am gaining weight.
As far as my lifestyle and eating habits are concerned, nothing has changed there. I am not eating more or exercising less. Just seems very strange.

This happened to me too.
But I think I know why.
It was so nice to finally feel good again!
I just decided to give myself a break and heal.
Just to be happy and enjoy life.
Hence I gained 20 lbs. in 2 years.
I've weighed 115 lbs. all of my adult life.
But then I've also had apnea all my adult life.
I think now might be the time to to start anew. (but it's been so much fun!)

Re: Weight gain 50+ days into CPAP??
Your body is working different now. It has long been known that eating the same thing after 7pm will put on more lbs then eating it at 7am due to the effect of sleep. You are now sleeping, you weren't before. Your body is more efficient now. You are going to have to be more aware of what you eat and when.
Most people lose weight because they get more active after they get proper therapy. Instead of spending evenings on the couch dozing they do things. Lots of little steps often actually makes a difference. Motion studies done on thin people and over weight people show that thin people rarely sit still for long.
Now that you can think clearly, are awake all day you need to re-evaluate your habits and lifestyle.

If you are like me, you will spend too much time on this darn puter, instead of getting off my rear end and doing something.
It became a habit when I was soo tired all the time and unable to get myself going...............now I feel sooo much better...but still stuck on the puter..not as much as before but.... still here
Note to self...gotta get out and walk around the block several times.............

Hi John,
Perhaps, along with other aspects of your body functioning better, your appetite and taste buds got amped up. I like jazzer's explanation too. Finally feeling good and enjoying life, including the culinary aspects...
For me, I lost weight once I started treatment...but I was/am overweight and weight plays a role in my apnea. So I was particularly motivated to lose weight and have been dieting and exercising. Seems pretty individualistic.

That, in a nutshell, is the problem.Perrybucsdad wrote:As far as my lifestyle and eating habits are concerned, nothing has changed there.
When you were suffering from extreme sleep deprivation, you probably overate (and got away with it) because that's what you needed to do to keep going. Now that you are no longer suffering from sleep deprivation, you need less food. If you continue to eat the same, then you pack on the extra that you no longer need. Hence, on cpap, you (and I) need to eat less.

Gotta walk the dog.
Dang it.
He won't squat until at least 4 or 5 blocks away.
The wind is blowing so hard.
If I'm not back in 25 minutes, send help.

I'm back--14 blocks, about 1.1 miles.
Dog took care of his responsibility early on.
I spent the rest of the walk marveling how the wind,
now somewhat abated, has blown the fallen leaves into brilliantly colored drifts.
The walk was much better than I expected.

Good for you chunkyfrog. Guess I need to get a dog.
My cat walks with me but she doesn't go very fast and she'll only go about 5 blocks.
I know this is the ticket but from teaching dance for so many years my feel hurt!
It's hard to walk far when your feel hurt.
Maybe I need a bike?

I gained weight too! 10 lbs in 1 month! The nurse and I talked it over and we figured it was due to the Requip that I started taking at the same time for my restless legs, but maybe it's got something to do with the cpap therapy. That's an eye-opener.

Re: Weight gain 50+ days into CPAP??
Thanks everyone for your posts. The thing is I have an active lifestyle. Yes, I have a desk job, but I am always moving and going place to place. I get about 8k - 10k of steps in per day, I eat a light breakfast (normally an apple) and a light lunch (soup, salad, and apple) and then a modest meal. My wife and I are not big eaters or snackers.
Back in 1997 I had to have my aortic valve replaced due to a congenital defect (bicuspid). I only weighed about 110lbs at the time and was in my late 20's. I had always been thin and was an avid runner (great combination). Anyhow, after I had the valve replaced, I went up to my current weight (well, not all at once, but shot up to 135lbs at year 1 and then gradually kept going up until I stabilized at about 174. The Doctor told me the reason I was so thin prior to surgery and put the weight on after was because my heart was working overtime to support my body and was consuming extra calories doing so. Was the sleep apnea doing the same thing?

Never heard of sleep apnea causing calorie expenditure. I can't even imagine by what mechanism that would occur, unless you were an insomniac who spent all your extra awake time on a treadmill. But sleep problems do affect hormones that regulate weight gain and satiety/hunger, so who the heck knows.jazzer4 wrote:Very interesting. Re: Weight gain 50+ days into CPAP??
I lost about 25 pounds since going low carb 1 1/2 moinths after starting cpap in Dec 2010.
The odd thing is that since I started taking D3 at the beginning of October (Ref Dr Gominak) I have been sleeping better and 5 pounds keeps trying to show up on the scales. Interesting. So I'm working on my treadmill desk as I type...

Re: Weight gain 50+ days into CPAP??
I put on about 10 pounds since starting therapy. The only thing I can think of is I was walking the Dogs less in the summer months because of the heat. Now since it's cooled off, were back up to 6 miles a day again and am feeling much better. Before that pre xpap, used to swim a mile a day at the gym 5 days a week. I was very very tired back then, but felt I needed vigorous exercise to combat depression, that I now feel was 99% caused by untreated Sleep Apnea. Maybe now I'm just in a much better mood so I feel like eating more, who knows!
