seeking help on symptoms

Post by macoil2 » Sun Feb 12, 2006 3:15 pm

I have a problem for which I received no help from my doc.
Has anyone else had this experience?;
While reading I tend to doze off but awaken gasping for breath and with severe sharp, pain in my abdomen.
Doctor says he will discuss with colleagues Has a anyone experienced these symptoms?

Did you ask him about sleep apnea? The dozing off and gasping for breath are classic symptoms.

The pains in the abdomen, that's another story. Perhaps heartburn, or an ulcer. Do Tums help?

Apneic events can trigger GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease also known as acid reflux). Perhaps this is what is happening.

I agree with WAFlowers, I was being treated for Acid Reflux before being diagnosed with Apnea. Once I was on CPAP, the reflux problem went away, and I haven't taken any further medication for the acid reflux problem.

The reason I suggested acid reflux as a distinct possibility is my own experience: I suffered nocturnal GERD 3-4 times a week for a couple of years before beginning treatment. It is now 6 months, and the last time I experienced it was the night before starting CPAP.

You can draw your own conclusion.

Sorry Mac, I didn't realize you were already on CPAP. You mentioned in a post last summer that you suffered from Acid Reflux - perhaps it's time to try a medication for it. Maybe even an over-the-counter one like Zantec.

If you're already taking a medication for acid reflux, then you should see a doctor about the pain in your stomach.

Good Luck
