Canadian DME wins the Highest price Award

Post by cortez356 » Thu Oct 13, 2011 9:12 pm

In Manitoba the Gov. has only one DME. Rana. Very fancy offices. I have seen posts from other Canadians complainig about high prices but here is a doozer. Up until recently you could not get an Auto machine on your health insurance. Because I had my sleep lab tests done outside the Proviince they would not pay for any supplies or a machine. I bought my mask and machine in the USA. Then the health system changed that policy and you could get masks, etc. at no charge once a year. Awhile back I had a phone call from Rana. Now you can get an auto machine by paying the differance in price. Sounded good but I was happy with my S9. Now I am wanting a smaller machine to use in our RV. I called Rana and asked about the Intellipap. They had never heard of that machine!! I knew they pushed F&P so asked about the Icon. Yes it is available and my special price would be over $1900 less the $200 from the province. What a bargain almost 3 times the US price!!!

So what was your first clue..................we live in Canada, everything costs more here. I paid $1600 for my F&P 604 and a quattro mask, that was before I was educated on this forum. You should try living in oil rich Alberta, health insurance does not pay for cpap at all.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

We have several DMEs in my town. The one I ended up with is call Pro Respiratory and they have been very helpful. I've got a very basic F&P machine which was just over $,1000CDN. My Ontario provincial insurance picked up 75% and plan picked up the rest so I can't really complain. Now that I see people on here able to analyse how they're are doing I do wish I could get data off my machine as I am curious. I know I feel better but some nights are better than others and I would love to know what is happening.

I hear RX drugs are less up north.
After retirement next year, we are considering a road trip for a few small items.
Relatives in Toronto and Monfort.
I will be sure to announce itinerary here beforehand, if it's any help.

Medicare (including the patient's 20% co-pay) pays $1200 to 1400 (depending on which state one lives in) over the course of the capped rental period just for the blower unit, and another few hundred for the humidifier. And we are talking ANY blower, even a cheap Escape, PR plus, F&P Novo, etc.

So I don't think your DME "wins".

Yes I also live in Manitoba, and because they will not give you a machine that gathers data you have to rely on how much water is left in the humidifier to determine if your mask is leaking or not.

Quebec doesn't cover anything so I paid my own.

British Columbia does nothing for working girls like me... thankfully, I have Pacific Blue Cross through work and spent >1000$ on prescription meds when I went to get my machine last year, so PBC paid the 2300$ bill for my kit... I've spent about 500$ on a new mask and various accessories (got a hole in my Climate Control hose... grr)... none of which are covered by PBC.
