Unnatural smell

Post by Puffman » Wed Oct 12, 2011 5:57 pm

Does anyone have any strategies for coping with the unnatural smell of masks and hosing? Not that the smells are unbearable, but they are hardly neutral. What can one use that won't compromise the integrity of the machine, hosing, or mask? I'm less than a week into CPAP. It's okay so far.

Have you tried washing the mask and hose in maybe Dawn Dishing Soap. And leaving it out to air dry?

I don't mind the smell of any of this....just bought a new car and love the smell of the leather inside.

If you like aromatherapy you can add a bit of your favorite fragrance in essential oils to a little cotton ball and set it on something next to the air intake of the machine.

Or there are things you can buy.

I set an incense cone next to the air intake, unlighted, of course.
I adjusted the distance until the scent was barely detectable.

Thanks. I have washed the mask and hosing in a mild handsoap. I'm thinking part of the problem is the newness of the equipment. I like the idea of placing a smell-good near the air intake. Something mild like vanilla might do. Neutral smelling is probably best, but I will try your suggestions.

I like Clear by PurSleep. I am going to try the Lavendar next.

For the first few weeks, I would smell something (almost like a "hot" smell - burning), but it was when I would take my mask off. I personally think it was due to the newness of the machine and any sort of residual coating on the heating plate for the humidifier burning off. I don't smell it anymore though.

You could also wash your mask & hose with your favorite face soap or shampoo. I have also used a minty smelling mouthwash to rinse the hose and found that pleasant.

Hi Puffman,
I was just reading a thread here about removing bad smells from used cpap machines. Somewhat related.

One piece of advice that would be easy to implement is to run the machine for a few hours outside or near an open window where outside air is available.

The ozone works wonders at neutralizing odors...I used it successfully very recently.
Cheers,
Jamis
