OT: Facebook

Post by NightMonkey » Tue Oct 11, 2011 5:29 am

My father told me that a friend of his received an email from FB stating that I wanted to be his FB friend. This guy is not a member of FB and has never been a member of FB and I never tried to contact him through FB.

I asked to see the email which was then forwarded to me. It is headlined, "Reminder: NightMonkey invited you to join Facebook."

It then states, "NightMonkey wants to be your friend on Facebook. No matter how far away you are from friends and family, Facebook can help you stay connected.

Other people have asked to be your friend on Facebook. Accept this invitation to see your previous friend requests."

IS FB aggressively seeking new members? Is it willing to be dishonest by manufacturing friendship requests to get new members?

I don't know about that NightMonkey. What I have noticed on my husband's emails is all the "notifications" that it's been awhile that he's logged on and missing all the news about this friends, family, co-workers, etc. I don't know what kind of timer they're using. For that, I'll agree with you.

if you read the terms of use for facebook (and a growing number of other sites)you by using them allow them to collect data. a lot of this is done without your knowlege using data miners and trolling applets. if its in your computer they know it. and there's nothing legally you can do about it.one of the first files they fish for is your contacts folder. if they've emailed you fb knows it .then the spamming emails to anyone on your computer begins. makes a person want to toss his laptop in the fire and live in the wilderness. welcome to life on the web. oh and by the way big brother is also watching=legally so dont put your terrorist plots on here and maybe your aunts apple pie recipe. perhaps orwell was right after all

We have subscribed to Big Brother. I can't decide which is worse, FB or my new "smart phone".

I hate FB. It's worse than Google for tracking everything you do on the internet.
Whatever you do, try not not to stay logged on all the time for FB. Sign out when you're done.
I got a FB friend request from a friend, but it was sent to a email address not known by my friend, nor was that address registered with FB! Since then, I quit using it.

I'm getting close to that point. But I would awfully miss staying in contact with my far-flung friends with photos and videos.

Here is a big caution about SmartPhone photos and a method for partial protection. Embedded in each photo file are the GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. Watch the video and see how easy it was to identify the exact spot of the little girl's bedroom, daycare, and even the section of the playground she used.

My husband and I closed our FB accounts more than a year ago. I could see the possibility of too many things happening, all of which were not good. One time, my husband used an xray picture of his knee as his profile picture. As soon as he did this, he began receiving emails marketing things for joints, etc. The reason I was concerned is because my husband is a clinical psychologist and an ordained minister. When we sat down and talked about it, we could envision numerous deleterious scenarios occurring as a result of his being on FB.

This is true. I saw a Dateline story where they solved a crime based on a photo that was sent via iPhone. They traced the coordinates and found the location where the "hostage" was held. Turned out the hostage was there willingly and was perpetrating the crime on her family.

I wouldn't put it past FB for sending bogus emails and friend requests trying to get you more involved and active in their site. I've gotten bogus requests from people I had no clue who they were. If you're familiar with the site 'Classmates' I used to get emails saying that "6 people signed your guestbook" or something like that. Then it said "Join CM if you want to see them". Of course, joining meant paying a fee. So I fell for it and paid the fee. When I saw them, none of them were people I knew and none of them were specific messages as if they knew me. So, I learned that they were all bullsh*t and it was CM's way of getting me to pay their fee. Obviously, I didn't renew.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

It is very likely the request did not come directly from FB. It may have been a phishing email. These types of email make it appear they are from someone else, hoping you will provide them with more information. Also some to FB apps/games send out things. These are not FB they are 3rd party items, that FB gets paid for putting on their site.

My kids tell me a new network community is about to start up....London?? something like that.
Maybe this is why f/b is making so many changes right now.
Also in f/b make sure you have your security settings as tight as possible.

I've never been the least bit interested in Facebook. Never have answered an invitation to be anyone's "friend" or view anyone's Facebook site. Or MySpace or any of those things.
Happy to not be on them.

This one looks very official and professional with the FB logo and the typical FB buttons. It has an unsubscribe button which leads to the real FB site.

The email came from update@facebookmail.com. Legitimate FB address?
