hepa filter on resmed s9 output?

Post by BarfVader » Wed Oct 05, 2011 1:31 pm

Can I fit one of these to the output of my resmed s9?

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/Respir ... -pack.html

I have the climate line which twists into position and has an electrical element in it, don't see how I would connect this.

There's no need unless you plan to hook one directly to your nose in the daytime too. Nature and the machine manufacturer provide all that's need to clean normal air. Anything you put in the air circuit of the XPAP is a added restriction, K.I.S.S. is the best solution. If you just want to burn more electric, run a HEPA device in the room that uses XPAP, at least the added noise may help you sleep. Jim

You are breathing the same air you breathe in your house. I consider the filter to be protecting the machine, not me.

Well, I want to breathe better air while I sleep, so, anyone have an answer to my original question?

Any "bacterial" filter as in your link above OR any Hypo-allergenic Filter would affect the flow enough to "confuse" your ResMed S9 AutoSet & therefore WOULD affect your therapy.

I was going to buy it from secondhandcpap.com. But was told that you shouldn't use it on the outlet side of a humidifier. On the S9 if you don't have the humidifier installed you can use it. ( even so if the humidifier is connected you can't attach it while using the climate control hose)

The S9 AutoSet uses the forced
oscillation technique (FOT) to determine
the state of the airway during an apnea.
When an apnea is detected, small
oscillations are added to the pressure
to measure airway patency. The CSA
algorithm uses the resulting flow and
pressure to measure airway patency
and differentiate central and obstructive
events.

Do you really want to put in silly filters in-between you and the S9 and prevent the advance features of your machine from working properly ?

In addition you would loose the functionality of the climateline hose.

If you really had to do it maybe it would work with just a regular <$10 cpap hose

Build yourself a hepa filter box to put your S9 inside of so it only breathes filtered air.

A HEPA filter is unnecessary. FIrst, the air is filtered prior to entry into the CPAP machine. Second, particulate reduction will also take place in your humidifier chamber. Finally, regions of static charge on the surfaces of the hose will attract and hold many of the remaining particles. And HEPA filtration really isn't necessary to reduce or eliminate bacterial/fungal spores. At the size scale of the particles we're talking about, bacteria don't float freely in the air stream. They have a static surface charge that tends to attract them out of the air to surfaces or to other particles floating in the air. They tend to stick to other particles such as flecks of sloughed off skin, hair, pet dander, dust particles. The majority of these particles are large enough to be captured by the filter at the inlet of your machine. It's not absolute exclusion of particles greater than 0.2 micron in diameter, but the air you breathe through your CPAP machine is already far cleaner than the air in your bedroom.

Do the filters on the resmed a really filter that well? On my Resmed Elite II if you put tape over the filter intake the blower still blows air to the hose output. The volume is not restricted very much. This is due to the vents on the bottom of the machine. The unit sucks in air at the bottom where there is no filter and uses the air intake to keep the circuit board cool. It takes the air that passes over the circuit to supply CPAP pressure.

If the air intake was dedicated to only the filter blocking the intake should stop the airflow.

I have found other brands do a much better job of filtering out dust and dirt than the Resmed.
Other brands seem to catch a lot more dirt than my Elite II.

The bottom vents are there to COOL the machine's innards.
Only air coming through the back intake goes into the hose.

I use that filter on my hose but I only use a regular hose- not the climate line. There's lots of dust here in Arizona and I have four cats, and it doesn't seem to affect my stats at all.

Those filters are meant for use on machines in sleep labs that get used by multiple patients. I think they're mainly used for a single night and then discarded.

If you use one of these on multiple nights, it will be wet from the humidity. Then it will sit like a wet sponge all the time until you throw it away. I'd be worried it would be a breeding ground for germs unless you throw it away every night.

Per CPAP.com: The In-line Outlet Bacteria Filter for CPAP/BiPAP (5 Pack) is a must-have among CPAP supplies for any customer suffering from allergies. This filter cleans the air as it leaves a CPAP or Bilevel machine. It provides very clean air by being used in conjunction with the machine's built-in inlet filters.

This Respironics outlet filter uniquely does not reduce the pressure at the mask.

For me, This filter does not get wet and is very good for allergies,
