Sorry, I don't even keep up with local teams. What matters is did YOUR team win?

I have been traveling, so only just got to see this thread. Was interested until I saw that Manly won! I lived in NZ for a number of years, so I have to support them ... What was the final score, and was it a good game apart from the result?

The result was the best part

(and to top off a great sporting weekend, Collingwoon got beaten in the other grand final too)

24-10 - the report I read said the best team won. Maybe next time, eh?

How about those Irish in the Rugby World Cup!
My apnea improves when Ireland does well (this sentence makes this thread "not OT").

OT: What is the difference between Rugby Union and Rugby League?

Politics and class.

Irish have always been trouble for Australia in world cups. However I think they have played their best game.

USA has a Union team in the Rugby World Cup. The games I watched they played quite well. The Russia vs USA game was great to watch.

Never heard of a US rugby league team.

A little more than that, there are also some rule differences.

In "League" rugby, a team only has a certain number of "downs" in which to score before they have to turn the ball over...so every 6th "play" (defined by a tackle, then resetting) is a turnover (generally a kick, but not always). Unlike American Football, there is no concept of a "First Down" whereby a team gets a fresh set of downs.

In "Union" rugby, a team has as many downs as they can get away with before turning the ball over via fumble, penalty, or other misfortune.

The primary split between the two games was over Amateurism vs Professionalism, back around the turn of the Century (to the 1900's). Folks who wanted to keep the game free from Professionals created League, UNion went to paying players first.

ozze - little to no interest in football in the U.S. aside from the American kind.

I'm an Aussie living in the U.S. for the past 13-years so I know LOL - although there is an Aussie Rules league here, but not too many Americans even know about it, but then they find out, the get hooked.

Got hubby hooked on Aussie Rules though and we catch it on ESPN for a few games throughout the season, then we pay for the satellite channel for the month of the finals so we get to watch the Grand Final live.

Cheers,
xena

Thanks for the information.

Now for the next big question:
Australian Rules versus Gaelic Football?

It was hard to find, and even harder to avoid seeing the result, but I watched most of the second half of the NZ vs Australia RWC game tonight - good game from what I saw. Australia were tough competition ... It will be good to see if NZ can beat France next weekend.
