OT "Mike & Molly" - cpap on tv

Post by RandyJ » Fri Sep 30, 2011 6:04 pm

I don't normally watch "Mike & Molly" but I was changing channels the other night, and just as I turned to that channel, I saw a couple in bed and the guy ("Mike") was wearing a cpap mask. This is the first time I've seen a character on a tv sitcom using cpap.

Other sightings in tv land?

They showed him last year using it. Of course they made jokes about it. This episode when they showed him there was a laugh track, but they made no jokes. Just made it seem like his normal sleeping.
But as far as I remember this is the only 2 times they showed him with it. I would not be surprised if the actor really has OSA and uses CPAP. The first time they showed it he was "sleeping" and woke her up because he opened his mouth, it looked and sounded real, or some really good effects. And this week it did appear to be really on.

From the few minutes I saw it appeared that the laugh track was because it was 4 a.m. and the alarm was going off but he wasn't waking up, so "Molly" kept nudging him with her generous form, until he woke up.

The now cancelled Men of Certain Age show had Andre Braugher's character using a ResMed S9. I saw that episode of Mike and Molly.... I am always amused when the person wearing the nasal mask with the machine 'on' can engage in a conversation.
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

I've seen a CPap and a BiPap on "Hoarders" before.

I think it's great that cpap users are finally getting exposure they deserve on TV.
It needs to be brought more into the mainstream anyway. We should be proud to wear our PAP Masks out in public, to the grocery store, movie theaters, restaurants, Church etc.
Our way of life should no longer just be confined "behind bedroom doors", or discussed in some obscure internet forum amongst ourselves. Hopefully Hollywood will stay on this course of acceptance and we will see more of this in the future. I personally look forward to a day when It's common place to see cartoon characters such as the Smurfs waking up with cpap masks on, and discussing who had the biggest Mask leak over night.

Maybe I'll wear one around town.

I don't think it's so great that they are using a serious disorder as a punch line.

For me the mask kind of is funny. This machine keeps me alive, it is coming with me if I ever need to escape during a house fire. However, the mask does make me look funny, for sure. I think by putting it on television it might actually help people feel less insecure about it. Just my thoughts, anyway.

In the movie Hall Pass, Jason Sudeikis' character uses a cpap and they make plenty of jokes about him.

In the series "Men of a certain age", one of the characters (don't know his name, never actually seen the show) wears an xpap to bed.

I personally don't care if they make fun of it, and I'm glad they're giving it some publicity, but on the other hand there's a lot of sleepless folks who already have a hard time accepting the idea they may have sleep apnea. The joking may stigmatize it even further and no one is going to want to don the mask.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Good point ameriken, of course I was joking in my first post about this. However I do think the original point being the more publicity they do give it the better also, because it does raise the awareness of the problem. I don't think it should be just the punch line of a joke either. With the amount of people now being diagnosed with Sleep Apnea I don't see how the TV & Film industry can completely ignore it all together. The Hospital I go to say they are diagnosing 50 people a week, EVERY week with this, which just seems mind blowing in itself. One would think eventually it will be less of a rarity and become more mainstream and less stigma attached to it.

Humor is indeed useful to help people with their shyness about a great many issues.
For example, ED is not at all funny from the sufferers' points of view;
but a little humor has helped get people discussing it--and DOING something about it.
Silent seriousness serves no one.
