could use some help!

Post by kennyr121 » Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:57 am

Been on cpap for 6 weeks. I was using a resperonics nasal pillow. Last Sunday night got rushed to the er, had three episodes of waking up gasping! On the third time after about three hours of half sleep it got so bad I thought I would pass out from no breathing. At the er they did lung x-rays (all clear) and ekg and bloodwork, all good. Doc said I looked terrible so they kept me. All testing was perfect, stress test, heart testing all good. best they could determine it may have had something to do with me having a cold and a bad sinus condition, and that mask was not the right one, may have caused the problem. Now using resmed nasal mask. Sleeping good, but still wondering. Before my sleep study I used to wake up at night similar to this, but not as bad. Pressure is at 9. Any suggustions?

Hard to say. Sounds like something was wrong with your mask. Not venting maybe?

It's good all your tests came out normal. It's good you went to the ER instead of ignoring a serious problem. I would suggest a follow up with your PCP. If waking up more often during the night is the main problem now, well, it takes some of us longer to get used to therapy than others. I suspect your recent problems may make you more anxious when sleeping. I would discuss this with your sleep doc- what happened was truly alarming and the sleep doc should be made aware of the incidents. Hopefully this was an isolated incident.
Good luck, keep us posted.

Dittos on it's fortunate that it turned out well, and that Y'all did not ignore the warnings. I have no speculation as to the what/why this happened, but I would be asking the following:
if you don't have a full data machine, I would be scrambling to get one. I'm guessing from rested Gal's list that your machine, S8 Escape™ II CPAP, is only logging compliance info. If it was a full data logger, you could be looking at what was going on from the machine sensor's perspective, and maybe some sense out of the events; but I gather you have little or nothing to go on.
Hope this was a one-time event and that you don't have to repeat the ordeal! Sleep well,
