Dr. increased my pressure to 10 cm and moved the S9 Auto into CPAP mode. Since then (for 2 months) I'm woke up by a stomach ache several times most nights. Sitting up, or getting out of bed lets the air belch out and the feeling goes away quickly...that's good.
My concern? What's this doing to the 'valve' that keeps the stomach contents in place when bending over or doing a hand stand?
I'd hate to find out, say in ten or more years, that it got stretched out and something medically invasive has be done to correct it.
Have you heard anything on this topic?

Re: Stomach Pumped full of air EVERY night
Hi - it's called aerophagia and is very common (here).
You can try raising the head end of your bed on some kind of 6" blocks/bricks which should help, and then ask your doctor about (at least temporarily til you're more used to cpap) lowering the pressure by even one setting - can make a lot of difference as well.

Julie... thank you. Forgot about raising the head end of the bed. Laying on my left side reduces the chances of getting aerophagia. Laying on the right side is a sure way to get it.
Just was wondering aloud here if any members with medical background or training had read/heard about this "valve" being damaged by getting pushed open all night long?

Re: Stomach Pumped full of air EVERY night
I agree that sleeping on the left side helps, but who sleeps that way all night without discomfort? All I can say is that the issue really make sleeping a chore. One thing that helped for me was making sure leaks are sealed. My auto cpap would raise pressure during a leak and that was a sure way to get lots of air into my stomach.
I wish there was a better way to deal with this, but the left side helps a lot.

I may be way off but I don't think it is the actual physical stomach contents that stretches that lower esophageal sphincter. I don't think it works like blowing up a balloon. What I think happens is that the acids in those contents (and it doesn't have to be a large amount) eats away at the tissues..this causes the heartburn symptom..over time the sphincter becomes damaged from the acid and scarring and thus looses its normal elasticity which in turn lets more of the offending acid damage the tissues some more. Creates a nasty little circle.

Thanks Pugsy, that makes sense. Will pay close attention the next time aerophagia happens...
But definitely feel bloated there under the left ribs and discomfort goes away as soon as I belch! Aw heck! Gotta laugh... Better to see the humorous side of the thing... husband has restless legs and I belch. What a combo!
Pleasant Dreams!

Your LES (lower esophageal sphincter) is the valve that counts and becomes slacker with age and extra weight... allowing the acid to back up... you could talk to your doctor about it.
