running older Remstar Auto on battery

Post by rbv24 » Mon Sep 19, 2011 12:17 pm

This past weekend I tried using a fully charged Lithium Ion battery from BatteryGeeks and then one of the automotive starting devices to run my machine (no humidifier) while camping. The nighttime temperature was in the low 40's.

The machine ran for about 5 minutes before it starting beeping and then trying to restart. This cycle would continue.

When I got home I checked the output voltage of both batteries and they were still at 12V.

Does anyone know if there is separate power circuits for using the machine on 120V (ac) or 12V(dc)?

Open circuit voltage doesn't tell you much about the battery condition. Check the voltage with the machine running and note it at 4 minutes and 30 seconds (just before it starts beeping). Is it still at 12 volts?

Yes, check the battery under a load condition, while plugged into the machine. Also you didn't mention where you got the DC cable you used to connect the machine. What kind of cable was this?

To be clear, it was your cpap machine that was beeping not the jump starter, right?

Are you sure that older Remstar Auto runs on 12 volts? My Respironics Bipap AutoSV will run on 12 volts only via a special DC-DC converter, which essentially provides 24 volts. The new Resprionics System One machines will directly run on 12 volts.

Good point....
rvb, help us help you, what is the make & model written across the top of your machine? and where did you get the cable for it?

The provider manual for the REMstar Legacy Auto machine specifies that it will run on 12V.

The humidifier will not run on DC. I would be cautious about running the humidifier on a modified sine wave inverter. I believe the power control circuit for the humidifier uses a phase fired control circuit, which might have problems with a MSW AC voltage.
