Tubing wraps?

Post by DrowsyDan » Sat Sep 17, 2011 3:34 pm

I've been using a Philips Respironics REMstar Auto A-Flex w/nasal pillow mask for a few months. I actually find it doesn't bother me much at all to wear the mask at night. I do notice though the build up of water in the tube, which often gets to the point where it blocks the airflow momentarily until the pressure "bubbles", past, then if will flow back & repeat, each time making a popping noise. At that point, I have to turn off the machine & hold the hose vertically so the water can drain into the tank. I see there are several sources of hose wraps online to help prevent condensation (and to make the feel of the hose a bit more pleasant) , and several wrap types. Velcro, zippered, etc. Zippered seems good. Any thoughts on the best type of wrap, as well as recommendations for a good/cheap online source?

TIA

I bought the tube "cozy" on cpap.com. I like it, although it is a little hard to put on. . . . Cost is very reasonable.

I also have the tube cozy. I put a plastic baggy on the end and start to snake it through. It is easy when you use the bag. I love mine and have had it for over a year now.

Thanks for the replies, is this the cover you're both referring to: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/snuggl ... cover.html ? When I search "Cozy" on that site, all I get is a rig to hang the hose over the bed.

Your machine should be lower than your bed and do you have the hose draped over your headboard or other hose management setup? https://www.cpap.com/productpage/HoseBu ... ystem.html

I got mine from my local DME and it is one that has a long zipper so its easy to put on. At each end there is a velcro fastener so it can be fixed not to slip on the hose.

DoriC is giving good advice about hose placement. Having the machine slightly lower than your head with the hose up, over, and down to you will absolutely stop the condensation from getting to you or causing the 'pops' you are experiencing.

You must be in a room with a pretty low temperature to cause that amount of condensation so getting a hose wrap will help eliminate condensation.

I have both and seldom get any rainout even though my humidifier is set to the max for my Respironics machine.

I got my hose cover online. Amazon or ebay, I don't remember which. It was about 12 dollars.
I don't understand the placement of the machine thing. I have mine on my nightstand. It's level with my bed.
I don't want water running back into my machine, the S9 tube isn't sealed to the tank. If it was running back into the machine, I wouldn't know there was a problem. Maybe I just need to turn down the humidifier.
I won't put it on the floor, I would bet that the floor under my bed is the dustiest place in my house.
Just my thoughts.

With winter coming on it is worth mentioning... for those without a climateline, if you do a forum search for "reptile heater" you will find several threads with detailed information on how to heat your hose for $20. Mine will be coming out of the drawer soon.

I sewed mine up our of polar fleece. You could also buy a bunch of tube socks at the dollar store and cut the toes off and put them over the hose until it is covered.

For 2 winters I used a homemade hose cozy (wrap). It wasn't pretty but it was effective. I don't sew.
First winter I used some fleece I bought at Walmart.. you don't need much. I wrapped it for 2 layers and secured it with velcro strip. Second winter 2 layers again but just used scotch tape wrapped around the fleece about every 6 inches.

Last spring one of the members was selling one of her hose cozies from Padacheek and I bought it. Now I am uptown girl with a nice cozy. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

You could do tube socks but it takes more than a person might think. I tried them before buying the fleece. The number of socks need cause the hose to have some weight to it. Annoying weight. Same amount of fleece weighs much less.

You can do your own fleece cozy for about $3 worth of material.

I don't sew either! Guess I'll have to buy one

My machine is on the nightstand next to and level with the bed, which has no headboard. I see about having it lower, but right now this is most convenient for me. The tube just runs straight off the top of my head, down between the bed & wall, then up again to the unit on the nightstand.

I do like to keep the room quite cool. When the weather allows, about 50 is ideal for me.

So I guess I bess get a cozy!

Or meet some nice woman who likes to sew...

Thanks for the replies.

You don't have to sew if you make one like I did.
I don't sew. No machine now or I guess I would.
You will want a nice fluffy fleece. Better insulation.
Don't forget the short hose cozy also.

I had purchased a wrap for my CPAP, have been cheap for several years. Ya think $20 would break the bank. haaa haaa

Although, I got tired of waking up with rainout so last week went and purchsed a hose after having a week of rain out. Had enough of that..

Have to say, why didn't I do this sooner. I had then found out by the CPAP Store my S9 CPAP works with a heated hose. Was thinking of getting one, but going to wait I think or check in with insurance.
