Promised (And LONG Overdue) Review of CPAP Seal

Post by ThomasMcKean » Sun Sep 11, 2011 3:53 pm

[Edit: Reviewed item is here: http://www.cpapseal.com]

Now that I have gotten my AHI down to 1.2 - 1.5 ... I think I am ready to review this seal. First, the short review, which I can give yew in just two words.

Ummmmmm... NO.

Now for the more in depth.

The first thing yew will notice is the packaging. Right from the beginning, this thing is awful. It will take all of your kitchen knives and half of your medical kit just to open the doggone thing. But the packaging problems do not end there.

This is a medical device, one that we all know should be kept clean, yet there is no container provided for doing so. I am not as anal about germs as a lot of others on here are, however the lack of something to keep this in puts even the most lax of us in a very uncomfortable and inconvenient situation. Yew would think that for what they charge for this, a container would be included.

It isn't.

The next thing yew will notice is that it is sticky. There have been other reviews on here that mention the stickiness but they have all been inadequate, as I am sure mine will be, to convey just how sticky this thing is. VERY sticky!

The directions are not crystal clear, but I found them to be clear enough for me. Keep in mind that the one I have is the large full face seal, which I am using with a large size comfortgel full.

Once this device is placed between yew and the mask, your airway goes down significantly. It takes a lot of adjusting once it is on just to be able to breathe. That same adjusting will oftentimes undo the seal. It is very difficult to get it right with this seal. Almost impossible. Part of the seal blocks your nostrils and another part blocks breathing through your mouth. It is almost like it is IN your mouth and yew are eating it.

[EDIT: was reminded to post about the eyes. This seal goes across the eyes and at times gets IN your eyes to the point where yew wonder if it safe to even OPEN your eyes. Not a good feeling and very poor and unsafe design!]

The seal is very large and thick and cumbersome and most of all, AWKWARD. Awkward in adjusting it, awkward in finding a place to keep it, awkward in breathing with it, and awkward in even just getting a seal. Looking over my data, I found that my mask actually sealed better WITHOUT the added CPAP Seal.

The only good thing I can say about it is that the aroma some of yew have posted about seems to be gone. I did not smell anything like what yew described.

This product does have potential, I think, but it just isn't quite ready. It needs to be shipped with a proper container and they need to do more work on getting the seal right while still allowing us to breathe.

I want to give this a good review, but I can't.

Now, onto what did work for me. I got my AHI down with Flonaise. Your mileage may vary with that, but it sure did work for me, and that is without the seal, which raises the AHI and the leaks.

This ends my review. I hope this helps some of yew decide whether yew want to try it or not, and I hope the CPAP Seal people also pay attention about these issues that need to be fixed.

I think O.T. refers to a third party 'universal' gel pad that fits (?) between a cpap mask and a person's face.
I'm not sure what it's called, but cpap seal might be close.
I was not impressed with anything from the ad.
I, too, am 'backward' about including links, or I would link to the product I've seen advertised.
But, then again maybe not.

I'm glad you said it, cuz I was wondering the same thing.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

So, what in the heck is this a review of? Is the misspelling of 'you' throughout the post intentional? (to me, it's distracting and detracts from credibility)

This seal may help whoever it was that is having problems after loosing weight in the face. Forgot who it was who was saying their mask no longer seals. This may in fact be a solution.
