"OT" I wrecked my motorcycle Yesterday
"OT" I wrecked my motorcycle Yesterday
Yesterday was a beautiful day for a motorcycle ride so my wife and I along with 12 friends decided to take some back roads up into the mountains to a restaurant in one of our State Parks. This ride takes the better part of a day and it is one of our favorite rides.
We were on our way home and approaching the city limits. I was in the lead. I topped a hill and there it was a car stopped in the road with no brake or signal lights showing. I don't know if there was a car in front of her attempting to turn or not. We were driving the speed limit 55mph. I grabbed the handle bars tight and applied the hand and foot brakes. My bike weighs 850lb. and when you try to stop a touring bike suddenly its like wrestling a bull. My thoughts were if I hit that car its going to hurt bad.
I tried my best to miss the car and and in the process I fish tailed to the left and then to the right and then back to the left. I went completely side ways and was thrown off the bike. I was probably doing 35 to 40 mph when I was thrown off. I landed on my left hip and elbow and rolled to a stop. My bike rolled and came to a stop about 10 feet behind me. I avoided hitting the car.
I tried to get off of the road to keep from being run over by another vehicle but my left hip was hurting pretty bad . I could move my finger and toes so I knew I was going to be ok. By that time my friends and my wife, who rides her own bike came running up and would not let me get up. All of the people who were riding with me were seasoned riders and no one was freaking out. I was even calm. That surprised me.
Someone called 911 and a first responder was there within 2 minutes and the ambulance was there within 10 minutes. I was transported to the hospital where they took an hours worth of xrays. Nothing broken just banged up. Brused and swollen left hip and road rash of both elbows.
My bike ( a Harly Davidson Electraglide ) was totaled. She gave me ten years worth of pleasure. I will have to start looking for a new one after I heal up.
I felt the need to talk about this and there is no one here at home, everyone in school or working, so I thought I would lay it on my buddies here on the forum. I hope everyone here had a better holiday than I did.

Did you ever find out why the car was stopped in the middle of the road?
These past couple of weeks have given me a few close calls on my bike. The closest was last Tuesday. I was in the right lane about to get into exit lane but since there was an SUV coming up fast in the exit lane, I decided to yield to him and get in behind him. However, another SUV decided he wanted to be in the right lane instead of the middle lane. There was no way I could have avoided him had the SUV in the exit lane not seen this and pulled way over to the right to give me room.

Wow, God sure as heck had his hand on you yesterday. I'm glad you're here and well enough to post what happened.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?
No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:
Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

No, she was crying and upset but I had plenty of help there who knew what they were doing.

Sooo happy to hear you are okay and ready to ride again...once you get a new bike that is. My son belonged to Pikes Peak Harley riders and was on a ride with a bunch of friends and the fellow that was in the lead was in a smash up too, but he ended up having a heart attack and died. His girl friend was on the back of the bike and she was thrown but ended up okay. Luckily my son was riding last and missed the whole thing. When he got there, there were damaged bikes all over the place, a few scratched up riders but only one badly hurt.
As my son says, "Its not "if" you are going to have an accident...its "when"". Fingers and toes crossed...he hasn't had one "yet".

At work, ditto on what everyone else is saying. You can replace a bike. However, you can’t replace a limb, mobility or a life. Glad you’re OK.
Re: "OT" I wrecked my motorcycle Yesterday
Glad you are OK. Its a good job you were going the limit and managed to kill some speed.
I look forward to getting a bike again one day. I'm sure if i could ride without the helmet which is legal in Arizona.
Hope your injuries recover and you get back on the bike soon

I think she was stopped behind a car that was attempting to make a left hand turn thus she did not have her signal light blinking and apparently she had taken her foot off the brake so her brake lights were not on.davelikesbeer wrote:Did you ever find out why the car was stopped in the middle of the road?
The trooper who worked the wreck treated the accident as a one vehicle accident since I did not run into the stopped car. If I had hit the car, according to the law, the accident would have been my fault.
The Trooper said they had worked way too many accidents at this intersection because the hill top does not give motorist enough time to react to a stopped vehicle try to make a left turn. There are no warning signs before you top the hill. Apparently the Highway Department is not doing a good job with warning signs.
The ambulance people said the last call they had made to that intersection there were 6 people laid out on the Highway.
No doubt I'm a lucky guy.

I was wearing my helmet and a good thing. There was a big oh gash on the back side of it. No doubt I would not be here typing this out if I had not had it on.

So glad you are 'ok'.
Bummer for the bike.
My thoughts are with you.
Keep that chinstrap secure; and let somebody else be in front for a while.
