Feeling much more sleepy waking up than when going to sleep
Since using my PAP machines (at least the last two -- a Remstar M series, and the current one a PRS1 bipap auto) I've found on nights when I've slept the whole night (at least don't remember wakening) that I feel *much* more sleepy when I wake up than when I went to sleep. I have to force myself to get up, and it often takes 5 or 6 hours for the very sleepy feeling to subside. For example, last night I slept with both my PAP, my oral device, and breathe-rite strips. I slept 7 1/2 hours. The pulse oximeter said that my average O2 was 98%, lowest at 91% (which was just one short incident), yet I felt absolutely exhausted when I woke up -- much more sleepy than when I went to sleep. My AHI was 5.17, with OA of 0.95, CA of 2.86 and H of 1.36. This used to happen all the time to me when I was using a FFM (F&P 431) with my REMstar M -- after getting used to the mask (I was never entirely used to it -- it would dig into my face and leave big red marks that would last for hours after I would take it off) and sleeping through the night I always felt incredibly sleepy when I woke up. Has anyone else experience this?

While an AHI of 5.17 isn't terrible, we all strive to get it below 5 and the lower the better. I can tell you that I felt immensely better at 1.5 than I did at 3.5.... so, work on slight adjustments to bring your AHI down to below 5 and as close to 1 as you can get. Sometimes just a minor .5 adjustment to the lower or upper pressure range will do the trick. I am sure others who use a Bipap will be able to guide you better than I.... they'll be along shortly, I am sure!
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

Emilia, Thanks. I realize the lower the AHI the better. One of the recurring problems that I have is that the PAP is adequately addressing my OA (which is almost always below 1), but anytime I try to fiddle with my pressure (and even when I don't) my CA is always going up. For the last few months typical readings I would get would be a CA of 10, an OA of 0.5 and H of 4. I had a home sleep test with the Medibyte Jr. about 3 weeks to check to efficacy of the oral device I just got and had an AHI of 2.3 with no CA's or H's -- this is better than *any* reading I've ever gotten from my auto bipap. The best readings I've ever gotten have been 2.75 for AHI -- and that was only once.Emilia wrote:While an AHI of 5.17 isn't terrible, we all strive to get it below 5 and the lower the better. But in my case the EDS seems to be *much worse* when I use PAP, than when I don't.Mary Z wrote:I still experience excessive daytime sleepiness afer 3 1/2 years. I understand some people never get over eds.
