Newbie still has Apnea with mask on

Post by colorlady » Fri Sep 02, 2011 6:13 am

Hi. Forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong place. I'm new and will take some time learning how this forum works. I am using ResMed FX. Don't know what the settings are. Diagnosed with moderate to severe OSA. I'm a 66 yr. old active female. My problem is that I wake up very early morning with what seems like typical apnea breathing. Taking big deep inhales, then long exhales that I almost have to work at, then after a few of these I start to drift off again only to wake up and start the whole thing over. Sure seems like the same thing that happens when I don't have a mask on. This is with the seal snug, etc. I'm looking for explanations as to why this should happen. Thank you for any feedback.

I am not going to be much help to you but I can say you are not alone. I am new to CPAP myself with only three nights on my machine but I find myself stopping breathing too. Its like I just stop breathing and this happens if I am on or off the machine??

I can see improvement in my AHI numbers and I do not snore now so I think the CPAP is doing something good for me.

There are a lot of sharp people on this forum with tons of experience that will help you but I can say without doubt, you need to tell them what kind of equipment you have and the settings. More info about your apnea will help them as well.

I will tell you to read all they offer but do not make any changes to your equipment without getting your Drs. blessing first. I believe a lot of folks on here know more about apnea and the treatment than some Doctors do. I know my Dr. only signs off on what the sleep study place recommends. But I would never make changes to my machine without running it past my Dr. first.

Hang in there and keep using your machine

Hi colorlady and welcome. You have come to the right place for help
First I see that you have registered so you should go to the User Control Panel right below the search box then go to the profile tab and down to edit equipment and fill out your equipment, use text (there is an option for that). That was people will know what equipment you use and will be able to assist you better.
OK, I have some questions How long have you been on XPAP? Does that feeling you described only happen in the morning?
What type of mask are you using?
We will need more information in order to help you but you will get help
once again welcome to the board.

When you get your equipment posted, we can suggest ways of looking at your data.
It does sound more like a central apnea event and less like a obstructive event.

Central events can happen during the time we are going to sleep or waking up and give symptoms as you describe.
Getting the actual data will help decide if this is what is happening.
I posted a description of this process at:

Hope this helps
