Noise level of Aura vs. Swift?

Post by Saltydog » Mon Jan 30, 2006 9:59 am

I am two weeks into this and still trying to adjust to having a pressurized snorkel attached to my nose. I have a swift that to me seems to be pretty loud. I also like to sleep on my side which has been rather difficult with the swift.

Thinking of trying an Aura, is there a difference in how it it is vented? Is it quieter? The venting on the swift seems loud but I have no reference for comparison.

Thanks!

Hi Saltydog,

I tried the Swift briefly before finally settling on the Aura. I think part of the noise level may depend on your pressure. Mine is a mind blowing 16, well it used to be. I just got an APAP so we'll find out this week what pressure I've been mostly using.

As for the feel and comfort of both, I almost threw the Swift across the room a couple of nights. I like sleeping on my stomache (that was a no go) and if not, then I used to switch from side to side, which didn't work well. I also found it loud. With the Aura, I can sleep in any position I like, the air is vented up top so it doesn't blow on my boyfriends back (another plus) and it seems quieter to me.

Thanks for the info, I am convinced that I need to try the Aura.

I just received my Aura today, so will give it a good test tonight. I've used and liked the NasalAire for 3 years. Some say the NasalAire is too noisy, but with my low pressure, it was okay. Plus my husband and I have used a "white noise/sound" machine for many years.

I expect it will take me some time to get used to "head-gear", because Nasalaire uses very little.

I also expect to like the over-the-head hose because it give more freedom when turning over, etc.

But, I wonder how many times I will yank my nose off when I try to retrieve my extra blanket from the bottom of our extra long bed . This might get downright laughable.

I am in the same place as you Saltydog. Just getting started and looking for the right mask.

I have the both the swift and aura. At this time I prefer the swift, yes it is noisier then the aura but I have not been able to get the aura to fit properly with the stock headgear where as the swift fits fine.

I too like to sleep on my side and that is why I am trying both of these. I think you have to have the right size head for the stock aura headgear to work. A big head with a a bump at the base of the skull, something like that. The aura headgear just does not fitt smaller heads well, I never thought that I had a small head before I got that headgear. I am planning on trying some of the modifications that people have mentioned here online to see if I can get it to work. I like to feel of the aura better when I have it on, the swift bugs my bottom lip and feels weird. With the aura I can hardly tell that its on, until it slips then ugghh.

Oh, with the swift I never had rainout but the aura I found out what it was. YUCK! I woke up from the sensation of water running down the back of my throat. I ditched the aura and back to the swift the rest of the night and no rainout with the same settings on the humidifier. Gofigure.

Rambling now, sorry. Anyway yes the swift is louder, give the aura a try if you can maybe it will fit you.

Scott, thanks for your advice. I have had rainout with the swift. I wrapped my hose with leftover quilting batting and that solved the problem (mostly). I may get a heated hose as living in Michigan with and increased heating costs results in my bedroom getting pretty chilly at night. I think I need to try the Aura. I don't think my head is small, but maybe I will find out differently.

Linda-

Looking forward to your results. My pressure is 9 which is also low, I think.

Linda,

Thanks for the laugh You'll just have to get your bed partner pull up the blanket.

By the way, I use the Aura after trying the nasal Activa and the Ultra Mirage FF masks and I really like the Aura best. Of course at first I had to tape my mouth but after the first week I'm getting by with out the tape.

I also like the Aura because I found that if I wake up in the middle of the night I can take a sip of water without turning the machine off or removing the nose piece. I couldn't do that with the other masks. (Haven't tried the Swift).

As far as rainout, yes the Aura, even with the heated hose, sometimes releases a few drops of water in the middle of the night I agree that wrapping the footlong extension of the hose with something - even an old sock helps. But all in all, I find the Aura to be quite comfortable for me - but reaching for that blanket can give you a turned up nose for a week!

I've never understood why people keep saying nasal pillows tugging at the nostrils can change the shape of the nose.

Hasn't affected mine one bit.......
