CPAP and Somniloquy...
CPAP and Somniloquy...
I need answers... of course, the questions will come slow and steady as I am working through the CPAP lifestyle. Considering I haven't even gotten an official diagnosis and prescription for CPAP (wait for it... it's coming ) here's a beauty for ya....
I just woke myself up from a full blown somniloquy episode... not giving a speech or barking out orders as I usually do; yes, I have issues.
Rather, having a very serious and much needed conversation with someone I can't speak with in daylight hours - my subconscious works overtime hours. So, having said that... it just dawned on me while I am laying in bed rehashing the conversation I had (having been a conversation I conjured and controlled, it was going very well - good dialogue, shared opinions, harmony of thought ) that people who talk in their sleep must have issues with CPAP. I know, I am kinda slow... but what can I do about the talking and impending therapy - I am striving for compliance right out the gate - and ceasing the nighttime chatter is not really an option, much to my dismay.
Also, if you'll indulge me in another question needing an answer...
Having found myself wide awake way before I am ready to start my day... what are some of the methods you use to get back to sleep. I am guessing that the machine will wake you or the facial appliance of choice will cause random sleep disturbances of its own... I really don't want to be typing out questions at four thirty in the morning to people I have never met, I would much rather be having sound sleep conversations with loved ones, but here we are...
Thanks for your help.

You must have a lot of stress. You might try bio feed back. Talk with you doctor about it. Fortunately I don't have a problem falling
asleep. Be glad you don't sing in your sleep.

There can be some disruption to sleep with just having the mask on. It all depends on the person. When I first started I woke often just to "feel" the mask. Others put the mask on and lights out til 7 or 8 hours later.WldWcnWmn wrote:Having found myself wide awake way before I am ready to start my day... what are some of the methods you use to get back to sleep. You may find that once you get on the machine that you don't find yourself waking before you are ready to get up.
I used to do that often before cpap. I think the apneas and the adrenaline byproduct from the events was a huge factor. Once I got my therapy optimal those times were rare. If you do end up with a form of sleep maintenance insomnia you might read some of Robysue's hints on how she dealt with her extensive sleep insomnia problems.

Re: CPAP and Somniloquy...
I have spoken with my doctor about it, there is not a lot known about the causes and cures of Somniloquy (Jerry, for you that would be sleep talking ). It was reported that sleep deprivation increases somniloquy and that it is not necessarily related to stress. There was a study done and something like 80% of toddlers tested spoke full words or mumbled in their sleep. The whole sleep deprivation thing is kind of what led to being referred to a sleep study in the first place. It's a bit of a vicious cycle... not getting enough (good) sleep leading to increased interrupted sleep. I just figured here with all the discussions of tape and chin straps someone else may have a similar experience, and therefore advice.Artcarved wrote:You must have a lot of stress. Thank you so much Pugsy.... now we're on to something.

Re: CPAP and Somniloquy...
I have had periodic episodes of somniloquy, but didn't know it had a name until now. Doesn't happen very often, and usually is part of a dream.
Had one the other night -- I was yelling at someone in a dream (but doing it in reality, too) -- woke up and woke my husband up as well. First time I've done it while using CPAP.
Might be associated with the antidepressant I take (Effexor), which is known for making dreams more vivid.

Re: CPAP and Somniloquy...
I once was dreaming some bad dream of some sort where I was wanting to scream but struggling to make a sound. I finally was able to scream a blood curdling scream (in my dream I thought) only to have my husband wake me up shaking me and asking me if I was all right. I was on my machine when I did this. Not a regular occurrence for sure. He did say the scream was pretty spectacular. Otherwise no history of talking or mumbling in my sleep.

Re: CPAP and Somniloquy...
I have to keep my windows closed or the police would be here every night. I scream and swear very loudly in my sleep while I'm dreaming. I dont know how to stop it. My doctor thinks it's caused from PTSD. My dreams are scary and make me scream. I'm embarrased if I have to share a room with anyone while traveling.
Re: CPAP and Somniloquy...
My husband does this on a rare occasion. Always associated with dreams about when he was in Vietnam and the stuff that happened there. Fortunately not a common happening.newname wrote: I scream and swear very loudly in my sleep while I'm dreaming. I dont know how to stop it. My doctor thinks it's caused from PTSD. Re: CPAP and Somniloquy...
I am a veteran also, but do not think any stress related issues I have stem from my military stint. I called my mom to chat about last week's sleep study and do some monthly catching up and just found out my mom and her folks suffered various parasomnias, including talking, walking and snoring (for those of us that like the medical terms, somniloquy, somnambulism and stertor). Things that I did not know I did until my lack of sleep became a medical issue (well, I knew about the talking, that started this whole ball rolling). Knowing this stuff can be hereditary kinda' cements my acceptance, as I come by it naturally! She said, "I did not know, you did not know, 'cause I did not know you needed to know." Funny chick, that one. I wonder how many people would be prescribed xPAP therapy if it was known to them they needed it; unlike those of us that suffer in their waking hours and come to realize something serious must be going on at night 'cause the brain fog and fatigue become too much to bear. When my daughter was little she would sleepwalk occasionally, and other than putting jingle bells on the front door and thinking it an odd tendency, I never gave it much thought. My ex just told me last week he caught me sleepwalking once when we were dating last year or so - but didn't realize I was asleep (until he did) or that I needed to know; and gave it as much attention as I did for my daughter (which was not much). Funny how the dots are beginning to connect. I guess wearing a mask and being hooked up to a machine is the least of my concerns regarding my nighttime activities... I have a full on functioning life after 10:00pm I never knew about.
