How long did it take to "take to it"?

Post by scottjf8 » Fri Aug 19, 2011 9:12 am

So I've got my setup going good now... I sleep "well", I breathe ok using the Swift FX, but yet I'm still waking up tired and yawning/sleepy through most of the day.

When will my body finally realize it's ok to sleep normal and I won't stop breathing?

I'm getting frustrated but sticking with it.

Consider yourself lucky. Many folks take a few weeks just to get used to the therapy, with the mask, the noise, etc. It looks like you've already overcome that hurdle!

Depending on how long you've had the apnea, you might not 'feel' the difference for 4-6 weeks, even longer. In my own case, it took 4 wks to get comfortable, and about 3rd month I started to feel a real difference.

Post some data with your software

Keep at it

It is different for each individual. I took to it right away others struggle a long time.
If you are still feeling tired, I would look at your data to see if you are havinh leaks, or how many AHI's you are having a night. maybe your pressure is wrong. or you might need a new mask.

You get the standard response when asking about how long it takes to "feel" what you expect or want.

First look at all your data to make sure that therapy is optimal.
Then look at hours of sleep (are you getting enough hours using the machine)?
Is the sleep fragmented? Do you wake up often? If so, why?
Then look at other possible causes for us not feeling optimal..Not everything can be fixed with the best of AHI numbers.
Pain? Meds? Thyroid? Vitamin D? Other health issues? Bed comfort? You get the idea.

Yes for some despite the very best of numbers and nothing else being a factor, it is often months and months before we really see much improvement and often it is very gradual. We read about the people that saw marked improvement almost immediately and think we should too. I know I did and boy was I ever in for a surprise.. There are more of us that take a long time then there are those overnight miracles. I was at 18 months before I saw the need to nap go away but then I had other issues affecting my sleep quality unrelated to the OSA which was fairly easy to get in line.

So if not feeling like you want, start with the software to see if therapy is optimal and go from there.

You may feel better over time. You may be able to adjust your therapy to feel better.

Get the software, check your results and consider tweaking your pressure a little to see if that helps. I feel better if I increase my pressure a bit above what stops me from having apneas show up on my machine.

Even if you don't feel better with CPAP, apnea was probably slowly destroying your body. If nothing else, it's like accelerated aging. At worst, it's risk of heart attack, stroke, etc. Or just continuing to get more and more tired, sleepy and worn out.

It took me 2 weeks to get used to sleeping with the gear on. that includes learning how to adjust the mask so it was not too tight and not so loose that it leaked. After that i went through a period of time where i was paying off the sleep debt. i would sleep for long periods of time and feel tired. My body craved the peaceful sleep i was getting. Once I got past that stage i noticed a gradual improvement in how I felt over all. I was happy to be able to sleep in the same room with my wife again and we were both getting the rest we needed. No one is the same. Some take to ti right away some take months and some never get it right. I was determined to make it work and if you have that type of personality you will make it work and work well.

Finding the right mask is a journey that you embark upon. When one thing does not work you try another until you find the perfect set up for you. to answer your question in my case it was 6 weeks before i feel into what i consider my normal sleeping habits of today. Which is still not all that great because I work swing shifts. In a few more years i can retire and i will be interested to see how well i feel when i can sleep like your body was intended to.

My symptoms were gone at day 3. However treatment hasn't been perfect. I've had a few bad nights dealing with the mask. I still wake up several times a night. But when I wake up now, I'm usually coming out of a dream. I take that as a positive sign that I'm now getting to REM sleep some 6 weeks into xPAP usage. But that is offset against the data from the machine that is typically scoring an event right before I wake up.

Pugsy said it, don't discount possible other causes.

It took me 3-4 months to get myself over the hump of 4-4.5 hours a night. Now I'm up to 6.5 and trying for more. I'm a light sleeper and its hard to get used to the distractions.

I like the night of the 20 th looks best of all from this summary. I would imagine that the individual details for that night show a much straighter leak line and not a roller coaster.
