Groggy in the morning

Post by jcurt172 » Mon Aug 15, 2011 7:31 pm

I've only been using CPAP for 3 days but am already noticing a general grogginess in the morning that lasts for about 3 hours. I'm sure I'm going through some changes and am wondering if anyone else else has had the same experience.

During my first two weeks of compliance with my APAP, I felt like a 90 year old woman! Worse than before I got the machine! My boss had minimal patience for my, "omg, I'm so exhausted," song and dance since he and I both thought the machine would start to work immediately.

That did not happen.

I didn't start to feel better until about a month in. From what I've learned on this site, it takes a while for some of us. In the end, the benefits out-weigh the initial exhaustion. I'm sticking with it and I hope you do, too.

Glad this wasn't something that was happening to just me. I assumed it was a thing that would go away after a while. It's kind of odd because I feel like I have mental energy but my body feels tired. It hits me again in the evening. I have noticed it getting a bit better and tonight will be my 7th night. (Yay! One week!)
So here's to future good night's sleep!

You are repaying your "sleep debt"..... you have been sleep deprived for how many years? It will take a good while to get all of that back. My suggestion: sleep in on the weekends. Nap any chance you get for the next few weeks. The grogginess will go away and you will begin to feel like a new person.

Good luck with your therapy!

Jeff

The grogginess could very well be because you are still having apneas. What are some of your statistics...Are you noticing leaks?

I'm not sure I believe in "sleep debt," but feeling groggy or tired for a while when you start CPAP is not that uncommon. I do believe it's part of the process of getting better, though, so keep at it.

By the way, jcurt172, the machine listed in your profile is probably wrong. Does your machine say "Philips Respironics" somewhere and "REMstar Auto A-Flex" near the display? If so, you have an excellent machine that records a lot of info that will help you tell if your therapy is working right.

The correct machine is "PR System One REMstar Auto CPAP Machine with A-Flex."

So why IS someone who is sleeping with the C-pap all night still groggy? (((Just curious, since this is not me. I'm not sleeping all the way through the night yet so my grogginess is no big mystery.)))

Good question. Even in the pre-CPAP days, if I took a nap and slept really deeply, I was sometimes groggy for a while. Or if I slept extra long Saturday morning, I was sometimes groggy the next day.

It seems that sometimes an extra dose of deep sleep leaves you groggy. Maybe you somehow gotten used to poor quality sleep and the deeper longer sleep under CPAP somehow leaves you groggy until your body gets used to better sleep.

I have been on a cpap for a about 60 days as of yesterday and I don’t recall feeling “groggy” ever, light headed yes, quite a bit of that however that is from one of my medications. I used to feel groggy a lot before I started using a cpap machine. I guess I can not use that again until I get over this chest cold or whatever it is I have.

Groggy in the morning could be because for the first time you are sleeping deeply and your alarm clock is breaking into your sleep cycle. I slept like the dead for 10 hours a night for the first few weeks. After the second week I was really groggy in the morning for a few weeks then that all cleared up too. Now I sleep about 7 hours a night.

3-4 days in this go around, I have the same problem and headaches too. I still feel great compare to off the hose though. I could live with these problems forever, its worth the trade. I do think they will go away with time.

I agree. I have heard stories of sleep debt but I don't believe it. Getting better sleep can't make you feel worse. Truth is, I think CPAP can take a while to get used to. I have been on and off for about 8 months and I don't feel any better. I am getting titrated on Sept 20 and I hope with a titrated pressure I will begin to feel better. I don't have any idea why for some the therapy works great and for others it is very difficult, sometimes resulting in worsening symptoms.

Intellectually, I understand CPAP, but for whatever reason it just isn't working that great for me.
