Gecko Nasal Pad... Not Getting It

Post by Culby » Fri Aug 12, 2011 6:30 pm

My ongoing saga continued with the DME giving me the Mirage FX Nasal. And after a really rough Wednesday night (not necessarily the masks fault... yeah, it leaked a little, but it got pretty cool overnight, and my phone kept going off), last night was DYNAMITE. a 3.8 AHI, 6 and a half hours with the mask (and a little more without... thought I was getting up when the pillow called my name again. )

But here's the deal... while discussing how my last mask caused my nose to get a sore, the DME handed me this ]Gecko Nasal Pad from ResMed. And each time I've tried it, it's accomplished precisely squat. I put it on my nose as pictured, strap my mask on, turn on the air, and watch my mask leak enough air to power a turbine.

And the more I think about it, the more that failure makes sense. You're putting this between your skin and the seal of your mask, but there's going to be a gap when the pad ends... right?

So is this useless? Is it too late to take it back?

I'm glad that you pointed that out about the Gecko nose pads because it was something I was wondering about. If they don't taper that pad to nothing, the ridge would leave a large gap.

There was somehting that Dr. Krakow said in his last post that caught my eye. He said that he uses "multiple layers of Remzzz". I tried using a Remzzz with my padacheek cover this past week while out of town and it works. I could loosen the straps a little and the leaks were tolerable. I might try 3 layers tonight.

I have found the Resmed Gecko Nasal Pads doing a great job. I use Fisher & Paykel #431 full face mask. Before placing the Gecko I wash it with faucet water and soap. Then I lie down on my back and mount the mask over it. To be leak free, I tighten the mask's head gear (same as with no Gacko) tight enough to be able to stick my index finger between the strap and face but not my thumb.

I have found the Mirage nasal not appropriate for me b/c I often mouth breathe while asleep.

I have also found that any full face mask that does not have a solid housing (which holds the Silicone cushion) and pressing against my jaw bones, not appropriate to be leak proof in my case.

F&P # 431, 432, and Forma are like that and also prevent my chin's dropping.
