Best mask for a child?
I couldn't be more depressed to be posting this question...
My 8-year-old was diagnosed with OSA and needs to use a CPAP. Anyone have any idea what masks are best for kids? Has anyone used a Sleepweaver on a child? We'd love to stay away from the nasal interfaces that press on the bones of the face, but he doesn't seem to want pillows going into his nose.
Thanks much.

Oh my. I'm afraid I don't have any information on masks for children, but wanted to express my sympathy for your situation. I'm sorry that you and your 8 year old are going to have to deal with this. I guess the "good" news is that you found it early. Probably not the type of bonding experience you would choose to have, but at least your child is familiar with CPAP and has you as a role model. This may make it easier for her/him to adapt. Crossing my fingers.

There are some pediatric masks on the market:
http://www.resmed.com/us/products/mirag ... c=patients
http://www.resmed.com/us/products/mirag ... c=patients
http://www.sleepnetmasks.com/products/m ... c-mask.cfm
Or there's always the "petite" sizes available in many masks. I definitely share your concern about the mask pressing on bones and affecting face growth. Would one of the full face masks be better? Has he tried a nasal pillow mask at all?
I think a nasal pillow mask that doesn't touch the upper lip at all (so NOT the swift fx) would be the safest route in terms of bone and dental development. At the very least, I would be in frequent communication with his dentist (or maybe even an orthodontist) to ensure that no long-term damage is done. Even adults can get tooth movement with CPAP masks, so that would be a big thing to watch out for.

Re: Best mask for a child?
The Opus 360 doesn't touch it at all. Just touches the nostrils. I don't know about any others, since I've only tried that and the Swift FX.
Re: Best mask for a child?
The mask I use (see my signature) has a very soft gel cushion and it can be molded to the face (using some hot water) I'm pretty sure I saw that it comes in pediatric sizes.

It looks like it does. It doesn't have clips, does it? Do you have to un-velcro it to get out of it?EO_123 wrote:The mask I use (see my signature) has a very soft gel cushion and it can be molded to the face (using some hot water) I'm pretty sure I saw that it comes in pediatric sizes.

Wow SU so sorry to hear this news.
My son just started also but he's older.
I know we hate to think of our kids going through this. But, we can be a huge help to them...but still it really stinks for them.
Stay strong mom...

Re: Best mask for a child?
It doesn't have clips - that's one of the drawbacks. However, I'm kind of a "set it and forget it" person, I have it set pretty much the way I like it, and I just pull it over my head every night like an awkward hat, every few nights I might adjust a little bit (sometimes my head swells.... ) But the head gear stretches enough that I can just pull it on. This may be unorthodox, but it works for me. I like how small and noninvasive it is, and it allows me to sleep on my side.

I'll have to keep this one in mind. I tried to get him to sleep with the Sleepweaver because I like that nothing presses on his face, but he didn't like it and is sleeping in the Micro right now. Thank G-d he's sleeping! But we are having to lift his chin to close to his mouth repeatedly. I really hope we can avoid a chinstrap. It's enough on his little face!

Re: Best mask for a child?
One of the girls from cpap.com recommended the Hans Rudolph 7600 extra petite for our daughter. We use that with the remzzz's liners and have had great success. She is only 3 and a half with no leaking problems. It s full face but we feel it is more important for her brain to get good oxygen and a good nights sleep. We are scheduled to go to Stanford for a follow up PSG in a month to hopefully get the mask off of her since her RME is in place for another 6 months.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Best mask for a child?
I just got an announcement that Sleepweaver has new headgear that adjusts to a wider variety of head sizes, you might check with them and see if this would work better for your child than the one he tried and didn't like.
