My Teeth feel like they have moved at night

Post by doublea70 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:14 am

Has anyone experienced this? I wake up each morning with numb teeth and it feels like my front teeth have moved as my bite is different in the morning. I just recently switched to a nasal mask from a full face due to issues, and now I have another. Any suggestions?

Your dentist can tell you if you are grinding. He can point out damage to the teeth. I do this too, you can buy an over the counter "boil and bite" device (Occlusal splint) at your local pharmacy to help protect your teeth, these wear out after a few months depending on how bad your Bruxism is. Your dentist can make you a sturdier one, but it will be more expensive, and most insurance companies don't cover much of them, so expect it to be around $250.

I should note, changing your mask 'probably' isn't causing this behavior. It may be that with the new mask, it's more noticeable to you, but you've probably been doing it all along.

You may have your straps too tight or are you using a chin strap, it also may be too tight. You can buy a boil & bite at Walmart for about $1 if you are grinding or clenching. I broke 3 teeth from clenching ...my dentist loved me ($$$$$)
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I don't think that grinding moves teeth...from personal experience, all grinding has ever done for me is wear down my tooth enamel. When I first started using my nasal pillow mask (a couple weeks ago) I would wake up with sore top front teeth. I played around with loosening my mask straps and now that doesn't happen anymore! The mask sits very loosely, and I was worried about leaks...but turns out the seal is still good (my leak rate is either 0.0 or under 5.0 always). If you search the forum, there are guides on how to adjust different masks. Good luck!

I've been getting a bit of this myself lately, and it seemed to start when I switched to the Quattro FX. I also had this several years ago, when I used the Hybrid, but when I asked if this happened to anyone here at this forum, nobody replied.
This hasn't occurred when using the M Quattro (at least that I'm aware of)

For teeth grinding, my dentist suggested a "boil & bite" device too, but I couldn't stand having that thing in my mouth all night. When you're a mouth breather, I don't see how those things can work.
It didn't help with the bruxism or the mouth breathing.

That happened to my front teeth the very last time I used my Mirage Micro.--LAST TIME--
I am between sizes; and I was sold a small (even though it was too large), since the petite was too small.
No one suggested a softgel, which may have been much better.
The only Resmed mask I wear now is the Swift FX (nasal pillows).

I agree with Nan. For some reason I experienced this worse last night than any other night and when I woke up I had an indentation under my chin from the chin strap and for the first time I had marks on my face from my headgear. I don't normally have this marks so I think I must have had everything cinched up too tight last night and boy did my front teeth hurt.

I use the dollar type mouth guard from the sports section at Walmart. Have used one for over a year before apap because I'd had bite problems, broken a crown, etc. Even with that, I've felt teeth misalignment many mornings with the Quattro FX. I added strap covers, which has helped prevent the deep marks on my cheeks, even though I readjusted straps to be a bit looser with the covers. I have a bit of TMJ on right side, and can tell if I sleep on that side, I have more problems. Next trip to the dentist in Nov. I'm going to ask for any advice he might have.

I feel the same way every morning as the mask pushes my bottom teeth back a little. It usually has resolved by mid morning. Good luck.

Sometimes when my nasal pillow is on too tight, my upper teeth will feel strange. Not really pain, but definitely different.

Unrelated to that, when I first started using CPAP, I noticed my lower jaw was sticking out just a bit in the morning (when I bit down, as you mentioned, the bite was not right). I believe this is the result of my airway being "inflated" and pushing my tongue farther forward. Initially, this was an issue, but now I when I wake up it's fine within minutes.
CPAP for the rest of your life.

Thanks everyone for the post, i think it is more of a pressure issue but I have the head gear on very loose, so i am really confused on why there is an issue. I was wondering if anyone would have a suggestion on a nasal mask that wouldn't put so much pressure on my face. I have purchased ones that are highly recommended by others but they aren't working for me they all put the same pressure on my teeth.
