How long can an apnea be?

Post by archangle » Tue Aug 02, 2011 1:54 pm

Another thread got me thinking.

How long do apneas get? 10 or even 30 seconds aren't that common. What's the longest you've heard of?

Well, that would depend... With or without CPAP?

During my initial sleep study, my longest apnea was 92 seconds. With CPAP, well, the PRS1 doesn't give values... (unless I missed something), but looking at waveforms, no longer than 20 seconds.

The longest I had during my diagnostic sleep study was 113 seconds.

Well, anything beyond roughly 180 seconds and you are looking at possible brain damage (maybe a little longer). If the brain is functioning properly, your arousal should occur before then. I've heard of them being in the ballpark of 120 seconds.

I'd guess that the longest apneas I've ever heard of are the ones that kill people.

A similar post from 2010:

viewtopic/t58249/Post-your-longest-apnea-events.html

a past post by a poster:

Jonnybee asked,

If I'm not breathing for 4.2 mins out of 7.0, how could I have maintained an SP02(%) min of 94 as recorded by my oximeter? Am I totally screwed up in my thinking

My (Avi) question:

In the following case of three Obstructive apneas events the Flow graphs show no flow for the 43 sec apnea and some for the 39 sec apnea. But the Minute Ventilation graph was above 15 L/min for the 43 sec and about average of 7 L/min for the 39 sec length. The normal tidal volume of a young adult male is 500 ml, and the normal respiratory rate is approx 12 breaths per minute. Therefore, the minute respiratory volume averages about 6 liter per minute. Could it be that the lungs were vantilated somewhat during these apneas despite no Flow?

My longest one during my study was 127 seconds...... they all averaged around 100-120 seconds.

Try holding your breath for that length of time......

Jeff

So how many seconds does it take before it will register on your machine? There seems to be some variation here.

I believe 10 seconds is the usual number before the machine calls it an apnea.
