worse asthma

Post by hose nose » Fri Jan 20, 2006 4:39 pm

My asthma has been worse since being on c-pap for a year now. I have more wheezing and mucous. I have had to take prednisone about 3 or 4 times in that year. Has this happened to anyone else? I rarely had wheezing before and now I am on more meds and it is still causing problems.

Yep.

Before any sleep lab studies I had occasional wheezing when I would first lie down, but the wheezing would stop when I coughed or cleared my throat. After I started on OSA treatment, during the *second* visit to my pulmonolgist, I was told I had a mild case of asthma.

I started OSA treatment in February 2005 and in April 2005 I began using Advair Diskus twice a day and was given an emergency inhaler, which I needed only a few times in seven months. But when I needed it, I really needed it.

I see an Internist (a rather good one, at least an expensive one) quarterly and at each visit he would regularly check my lungs with a stethoscope. My Internist visits were regular for many years due to an unrelated problem. I saw him late January 2005 and he never, ever mentioned any concern regarding asthma. He was quite surprised when I visited him in late April and told him I started treatment for asthma.

And the further crazy news is that within weeks after I started Advair, I developed insomnia. The pulmonologist said the steroids in Advair could very well be at least part, if not most, of the reason for my insomnia. It seems that a few percent of people taking Advair develop insomnia. I hope you don't develop it, my good friend.

I don't understand.

How does this inline filter affect asthma? Are you saying, Guest, that this filter would improve an asthmatic condition, or would have prevented it from occurring? I am interested in your reply.

My thinking is that anything that can reduce the amount of dust, pollen, pet hair or other airborne asthmatic contaminates that can enter one's airway should help reduce the number of asthmatic events.

I have asthma as well - since I have been 14. I started CPAP therapy in Match 2005 - yup, almost a year now - and have noticed that my asthma is much better. I believe this is due to the fact that I am getting great sleep, and i have been sick with colds and bronchitis less often - actually only once now, and only once on steroids since I started cpap. Colds and bronchitis tended to severely exacerbate my asthma, and since I have only one major episode of bronchitis in almost one year, my asthma has been doing awesome.

I have severe steroid dependent asthma which is triggered by viral respiratory infections such as colds, flu. I have noticed, also experienced by others on this forum, that I have had fewer colds since I have have been on XPAP for the last couple of years. I attribute that to an improvement in my immune system via getting more rest at night, although my pulmunologist and internist do not agree with that analysis. Perhaps they are right, though. This has been a bad winter for my asthma, have been hospitalized twice this winter so far. My doctors do stress, though, that even though my asthma trigger is a respiratory infection, that I need to avoid other situations, such as smoke, fumes, particulates in the air (such as dust, etc.) as they help set up my lungs for an asthma attack. I think that the double filtered air as breathed though an XPAP is helpful that regard. I change the filters frequently because I think it might help.
Good luck with your XPAP and asthma!

I have Asthma and mine has been worse since starting CPAP as well. I was given an inline filter as my Asthma is m ore reactive airway and well any dust and whatnot makes it worse. They thought the inline filter would help. I havnt been able to use it til after I go back to the doc cause I really think it decreases the pressure and I felt like I was suffocating with the inline filter.

I take Advair, Albuterol as needed either by inhaler or Nebulizer and also Singulair and Zyrtec to help reduce allergies which in turn is supposed to help with my asthma. I have also noticed a HUGE increase in mucous since starting CPAP as well...I have an appointment with my Pulmonologist next week and we shall see what he recommends...After that I think I am gonna make an appt with my sleep doc to see what she has to say even though I am very angry with them an dthe fact I had an overnight pulse ox done Dec 12th and NEVER heard from them after leaving messages twice a few weeks apart so I need to go pick a bone with the office there...Hopefully between the two docs I will eventually get some of this all worked out and I will feel better...

Glad to see I am not alone with the Asthma...
