When should i try a new mask?

Post by Nightshifter » Sat Jul 23, 2011 9:04 am

Newly diagnosed and have spent 3 nights with the "zest". I am not yet in love with it--not sure if it is the exact mask or just a mask in general. I have a small face and it just feels like the bottom of the nasal mask sits 1/2 way into my upper lip. This morning the bridge of my nose is sore and my face feels swollen. So when do you decide that it isnt just novice trial and error and that i should head back to the DME and try another? Does it ever really become a comfy process or do you just learn to deal with it?

No mask should cause pain or sores. So either it is too tight or it is a poor fit. Or both.

Personally I wouldn't give it more than a week to see if I could do enough adjustments to make it comfortable before I would be trying something else. In some cases with the experiments I tried, they didn't last one night.

Masks are the hardest part of this therapy. Comfort and seal. It does get easier and often takes trying several masks.

You should change masks the minute you feel like throwing the offending one across the room LOL OK, seriously, I agree your mask shouldn't cause sores or other such things and should fit your face structure and needs. Do you get your masks from a DME? If so, ask about mask warranty. Some companies have a 30 day warranty/guarantee so if the mask doesn't work for you another can be tried. Be careful to get documentation when you take a mask home and another piece of documentation if/when you return it. DMEs have been known to bill insurance for each mask as if you kept them all. This could impact your insurance cap, copay, etc.
