APAP VS. CPAP????

Post by nonsleeper » Fri Jul 01, 2011 8:08 pm

Hi!
I'm newly diagnosed. I have a CPAP + machine, device model listed below. I have questions for the apnea veterans...A quick background..
My machine has the pressure relief feature but it was soo loud when it changed pressure levels it would wake me up. We ended up adjusting it so now there is very little pressure relief on exhalation, and less noise.
(This has happened every night since i've been on the machine = 6 nights) I wake up after 3 hours (almost on the dot) and feel a lot of air moving through my nose pillows. It's almost like it soo much it's waking me up.
So my questions are
1st..On an apap machine, does it make noise when it adjusts the pressure of air.
2nd..Has anyone used a CPAP and changed to an APAP and if so, do you like it better?

I plan on calling my Dr. on Tuesday to discuss but was curious to hear opinions first.
thanks!

Just in case my info doesn't post

In theory, once you get an APAP machine dialed in, it should be more comfortable.

In may case, I ended up with "issues" using APAP and decided to use CPAP.

Recently, I changed machines and am now having another go at using APAP, and it is going splendidly. It is too early to tell for sure, but this is encouraging. My original issue was that the machine would end up at maximum pressure and wake me up. I think this may have been due to a leak issue. The change may be because I am a little better and keeping my mask on and eliminating leads as I sleep, or this machine may be better able to handle upset conditions.

As far as noise goes, I don't notice the noise of the machine, so I am unable to offer any help with that.

The beauty of an APAP is that it can be used in either auto or straight cpap modes. Those who prefer a steady pressure can use it in cpap mode, but when they want to self titrate from time to time, they can set a range and see what the data says in order to tweak things. Many prefer using a range of pressures in apap mode for various reasons.... so it is a preference, but having the option to go either way is the big bonus of owning an apap. If you have a cpap, you'll never be able to self titrate.

You say you are new to this, and if you are in the window in which you can swap machines, I'd try to get the doctor to write a new Rx for an apap.
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

thanks hosecrasher! Your situation with the CPAP sounds like the one i'm having. When I wake up there's soo much pressure, i almost feel like i'm suffocating. Good to hear the APAP is working is for you!

thanks Emilia! I've only had my machine maybe 2 weeks??!! I'm definitely going to call my Dr. on Tuesday and see if i can switch! I would like to have the option to see which works better especially since I'm waking up at the same time every early AM with the same issues.
P.S. Your cat is gorgeous!
