Is there a way to try different masks ?

Post by downsize » Sat Jun 18, 2011 7:00 pm

A big slice of heaven to me would be to get to try masks until I found one I liked a lot. On several CPAP shopping sites, I see the words " Can return when purchased with insurance"

But I do not have insurance Is there ANY way I can try out masks for a couple of days, yet return them if they do not work out ? Or is this just a pipe dream ?

Thanks

The term... 'when purchased with insurance' ...means that if you purchase return insurance when you buy the mask, you may return it if you don't like it. If you purchase a mask from a local DME at a higher retail price you will have a 30 day return priviledge.

Who has used an online purchase with "insurance?" How does the "return insurance" work? Suppose you buy a mask for $100 and add $25 for "insurance." If the mask doesn't work, do you get back $100 or $125?

talkaboutsleep.com offers FREE "return insurance" and allows up to 2 mask "tries" a month. I assume that you end up paying for ONE mask and no refund of that ONE charge but you keep trying at 2 masks a month until you find THE mask that works for you. I don't remember about shipping charges as I only glanced thru the offer since I get my masks via insurance thru my local DME provider. The apnea support forum TAS provides is not a particularly busy forum as compared to cpaptalk but there are some great interviews and articles to be found there.

Here's the offer from TAS.
Talk About Sleep is proud to announce the introduction of a new CPAP Mask Assurance program!

You'll have 30 days to try a CPAP mask and if it doesn't fit well, just call customer service toll free, and we will set you up with a return authorization. You'll be responsible for returning the mask and we'll credit you the cost of the mask, excluding shipping.

Other companies charge you up to $30 for the privilege of returning a mask... we're offering it for FREE!

The spirit of this program is to take some of the difficulty out of purchasing a CPAP mask online. There is a limit of two mask returns per customer per month.

This program is just another way of thanking you for the years of support and continued business, and why Talk About Sleep is the best place to go online for your CPAP equipment needs!

If you have any questions give us a call toll free 877-475-3373!

I'm NOT trying to take business away from cpap.com. Johnny, et all, have been sooooo good to and for us both w/this forum and w/cpap.com and cpapauction.com and .... but downsize sounds like he/she needs some help finding that RIGHT mask and we all know how discouraging that can be for some. Especially when its out of pocket purchases.

I think I should have tried a large mask before settling on my medium but I make the med work. I am afraid the large would have been too big plus the fact that I am going back on my Atkins tomorrow when I return to work tomorrow after having surgery and will be losing more weight.

You NEVER get your insurance payment back.....If you have an never have an accident with your car does the Ins company refund your premium? The Ins payment is for the privilege of returning the mask and getting a refund on the used mask. ...not on the Insurance

You are ignoring the important issue here. If you had to try 3 different $100 masks before you find the right one, do you pay $25 again for each mask? i.e. does it end up costing you $175 or $125 if it takes you 3 tries.

To put it another way, is it $25 extra to keep trying until you find the right mask, or $25 per mask?

This could make it more attractive to get your first mask from a local DME instead of online. When you go to a local DME, you may pay more money up front, but you don't usually have to pay an additional fee for each mask you try.

Yes, I realize $100 and $25 are just example prices. YMMV

When you buy a mask with return insurance the insurance is paid to the company you buy the mask from and is not refunded if you return the mask. You are just refunded the cost of the mask. Our sponser cpap.com pays for return postage.
Another fairly inexpensive way to try masks is though cpapauction.
Thanks for the information on TAS.

Don't you have to have a prescription to buy a mask at cpapauction?

The $25 is for EACH. mask you want to try. The incentive is to make informed decisions and not just tiptoe thru their entire inventory.

While I am not rich, I simply have NO problem with payinmg $25 per mask to try it. Well, well worth it to me. I can not put a price on a night of better sleep !

I have no problems with paying $x per mask to try. I just want to be sure everyone understands whether it's per mask or until you get the right mask.

It's also important to realize that this is different from the way most DMEs work, at least for new CPAP patients. And you may be able to try masks on at the DME.
